NEW is a gallery of contemporary art.
Located on the grounds of the Quarry Arts Centre, NEW Gallery provides an unconventional space for exhibitions and events.
Built by Yvonne Rust and a community of hippies in the 1980s from recycled materials, the gallery and it’s associated buildings are an excellent example of Vernacular Architecture. The scallop-shaped roof is formed from a number of load bearing timbers (recycled telephone poles) that radiate from a central point. A layer of burlap cloth was then laid over these, drooping in between, forming the distinctive curves. Concrete was then poured over the burlap form.
As a centre for ceramics in the region, the Quarry provides excellent facilities including, electric, gas and wood-fired kilns. More details on the Quarry Arts Centre web site.
