Naoko and Julia – Tapestry Weavers

One of the most striking features in the gallery is our magnificent tapestry loom — originally created for the ambitious community weaving project Whangārei Our Place, led by the Whangārei Creative Fibre Group.

Designed and built by Glenda and Brian Ferguson using seasoned native timber from their rural Whangārei property, the loom has become a centrepiece of creativity and collaboration.

The original 3m x 4.3m tapestry was completed in 2016 and gifted to the people of Whangārei. Since then, a new project, Town Basin — Our History, has continued to draw in both weavers and visitors.

This latest work features four panoramic scenes capturing the Whangārei Town Basin from pre European times through to today.

Visitors are warmly invited to watch our weavers at work on the central panel — or sit alongside them and try weaving the basics on the smaller side panels. It’s a living, evolving artwork that celebrates community, history, and the craft of tapestry.

Wendy Naepflin – Harakeke Artist

Wendy Naepflin works primarily with harakeke (NZ flax), creating art that is deeply rooted in sustainability and respect for natural materials. She embraces the intrinsic qualities of harakeke, using different preparation methods to achieve a wide range of textures and forms.

Her process is meticulous and hands on — harvesting, splitting, scraping with a knife, peeling fibres with a mussel shell, twining on her thigh, shredding, curling, dyeing, plaiting, and finally hand stitching each piece together. Every step reflects patience, skill, and a profound connection to the material.
