Naoko and Julia – Tapestry Weavers

One of the most striking features in the gallery is our magnificent tapestry loom — originally created for the ambitious community weaving project Whangārei Our Place, led by the Whangārei Creative Fibre Group.

Designed and built by Glenda and Brian Ferguson using seasoned native timber from their rural Whangārei property, the loom has become a centrepiece of creativity and collaboration.

The original 3m x 4.3m tapestry was completed in 2016 and gifted to the people of Whangārei. Since then, a new project, Town Basin — Our History, has continued to draw in both weavers and visitors.

This latest work features four panoramic scenes capturing the Whangārei Town Basin from pre European times through to today.

Visitors are warmly invited to watch our weavers at work on the central panel — or sit alongside them and try weaving the basics on the smaller side panels. It’s a living, evolving artwork that celebrates community, history, and the craft of tapestry.

Jackie Broughton – Wool & Naturally Coloured Sheepskin Artist

Jackie creates hand knitted woollen hats and booties, and offers naturally coloured sheepskins that celebrate the beauty of her flock. Her lifelong interest in coloured sheep began many years ago when two coloured ewes were born into her otherwise white Romney flock — a moment that sparked a passion that continues today.

Her sheepskins originate from spotted Polwarths, whose unique natural patterns inspired her to begin offering them for sale. Each skin is commercially tanned to ensure quality, while retaining the one of a kind markings created entirely by nature.

All animals are ethically farmed, and every piece — whether a cosy knitted item or a naturally patterned skin — reflects Jackie’s care, respect for her flock, and appreciation for the individuality of each animal.

Our community just got a little more colourful.

We’re excited to share that a brand‑new billboard is now up on a member’s fence along Western Hills Drive in Whangārei — proudly promoting our gallery and the creativity it represents.

A huge thank‑you to our generous member Faye Garlick for offering the space. Every little bit helps us champion the arts in Northland.

Introducing Mishka Patterson, leadlight and stain glass artist The Bach- Basin Art & Craft House

Mishka has come from a family of artist/craft persons who pursue the passion of art to create their own personal works. He was brought up on a 10 acre block in Waimauku, West Auckland.

He studied at Carrington Polytech completing a craft and design diploma specialising in glass while also working off campus for glassblowers. Later working for craftspeople in Australia and New Zealand he is now a self-employed crafts person.

Mishka is now mainly a leadlight and stained glass artist but also rents a studio to blow glass, make bowls and vases, commissions and work for galleries and exhibitions.

As a creative person painting and drawing and designing, craft or art is a process of progression toward a finished piece. To complete a commission or an artwork is rewarding and fulfilling as creating a piece takes quite some time.

From the first stage of consulting with the client, drawing up designs to scale and making a pattern to cut glass from, then the leading, soldering and putty it is completed with a final polish and installation.
