Our current exhibition in the Back Gallery is Celebrating Stitcherhood.

A group of friends have been meeting every week to practice the art of slow stitching. Slow stitching is a global art movement using primarily found, recycled or up-cycled materials to create unique, hand stitched works.

Throughout 2025 the group have been following renowned UK fibre artist Kathryn Chambers, doing monthly stitch challenges exploring a range of slow stitching techniques. These twelve individual works were then stitched together to form the Coverlets of Comfort that make up this show.

What I find amazing and inspiring is how six women all follow the same instructions but end up with such different results showing their distinct personalities.

As well as the coverlets there are numerous small, individual items of which some are for sale.

One or more of the makers will be with the exhibition each day and you can try your hand at slow stitching yourself too.

The exhibition is open every day from 10am to 4pm, last day is Sunday 10 May.

Best Start Harrison Street have filled the Front Gallery with colour.

On display is work by their Infant group (under 2 years old) and Pre-School (3 to 5 years old). The theme for the pre-schoolers was Bugs and you can see some lovely interpretations.

Come and support our next generation of artists. There are some interactive activities to enjoy as well.

This exhibition is only on for three days (last day Thursday), so be quick.

The silent auction has finished but you have one more chance to buy some of Ewen Stratford's and Sandra Brumby's artwork.

The galleries are open tomorrow afternoon and any sensible offer will be considered. They want them gone 🙂

Phew. Luckily there was no repeat of 2015. It felt quite surreal preparing for a flood when it was such a nice sunny day. We lifted everything off the floor, but it's all back in place now.

So come down and place a bid on one of the many pieces in the silent auction. There is also a lot of art for sale for only $25 or $50 that you can take home straight away.

Ewen Stratford is in the Front Gallery and Sandra Brumby in the Back Gallery.

Here are photos of Sandra's art.

Silent Auction

Well known Whanganui artists Ewen Stratford and Sandra Brumby are having a silent auction of their work. All the artworks on the walls are part of the auction. Bidding starts at $50 and you can see what the previous person has bid. The auction closes on Friday 24th of April at lunchtime.

There are also some artworks in the middle of the space, which are available for immediate purchase (at a very low price).

This is a great opportunity to score a good deal, so come and have a look and put in a bid.

These photos are all Ewen's work. More photos to follow of Sandra's art.
