This issue is so important to our town of Westport and the wider communities. Real people, real lives, their jobs and businesses, need this to continue. Please read and consider signing in support of the mine continuation.

👉🏻This is about more than coal. It’s about our future.

A group of community members from Buller have come together to make sure the voices of those who support the continuation of Stockton Mine are heard. We’ve created an Open Letter supporting the Buller Plateaux Continuation Project.

Why?

The continuation of the mine reaches far beyond the mine itself. It affects the families who rely on the jobs, the over 100 local businesses Stockton supports, the schools and clubs, and every person in a district that has already lived through one major industry collapse, multiple closures, and does not want to go backwards again.

We also say plainly that mining has environmental impacts and people hold different views about them. Our support does not mean support at any cost.

A little change for From The Field 🌿

We’ve moved from our retail space in Palmerston Street and our photographic artwork is now available online and through selected retail stores around the district.

A huge thank you to everyone who visited our little Westport gallery, stopped for a chat or took a piece of the West Coast home with them.

And look out for the inaugural Issue of Sense & Wander magazine, full of unique stories and photography of the Buller district, coming in March 2027.

Have you spotted Westport’s newest piece of public art?

Our photograph, A Window In Stone, captured at Cape Foulwind’s iconic Hole in the Rock, now has pride of place in Lyndhurst street, for everyone to enjoy.

We’re proud to have donated the image to this project, made possible through the generous sponsorship of Buller REAP.

It was a true community effort. A big thank you Rachelle from Heritage Jewellers who cleaned and painted the wall in preparation, and to Steve from The Sign Shop for bringing it all together with printing and installation.

And finally, thank you to Promoting Buller for organising the project and helping showcase another beautiful piece of Buller to locals and visitors alike.

It’s wonderful to see our region celebrated through local collaboration and art.

Start Shooting Now: The Sense & Wander Photography Competition Opens December 2026.

We’re opening our first regional photography competition. Winning images will be published in our inaugural print magazine, Sense & Wander, Buller edition, and shown at a public exhibition in Westport.

The theme
There’s only one: Sense & Wander.
If it captures something of what it feels like to wander the Buller District, it belongs.

Entries must be taken in the Buller district, from 2025 onwards.

How it works
Entries open 1 December and close 28 February.
Anyone can enter, resident or visitor, professional or amateur.
Up to 3 images each.

A five-person panel of judges on composition, subject, originality and connection to Buller.

Winners and finalists appear in a digital gallery on senseandwandermagazine.com alongside the exhibition.

You keep copyright. We simply ask to publish selected entries in print and online, with your name against each one.

The exhibition opens in Westport in March, running four weeks, timed to launch alongside The Buller Edition
magazine.
