The Canterbury Astronomical Society (CAS) meets every third Tuesday of the month (excluding January and December). See www.cas.org.nz for details. Practical Astronomy for All Ages is a friendly, informal meeting catering to those who are just starting out in astronomy, as well as those looking for practical assistance and advice. This meeting is held on the third Tuesday of the month, beginning in

March 2009, from 7:00pm to 7:45pm and precedes the society's main monthly meeting. The Society's main meeting starts at 8:00pm. All things astronomical are discussed at these meetings, from informal chats among members, to guest speaker presentations, along with annual Soapbox evenings and light hearted quiz nights. On the Saturday immediately following the monthly meeting of the society, there is a gathering at the Society's observatory sited 18 km to the west at West Melton just outside of Christchurch City. This gathering gives new astronomers the chance to get help with their telescopes or in locating objects with the more experienced observers on hand to help out. If you are up early tomorrow morning before the Sun, be sure to catch this gorgeous trio in the dawn skies. You'll be able to spot Saturn, a thin crescent Moon, and Mars hanging low together in the eastern sky before sunrise. The best time to catch them will be around 6am.

To learn more about all of the happenings in the sky this May, be sure to check out our monthly series The Southern Night Sky!

✨DESIGN A PATCH ✨
The New Zealand Space Agency is celebrating their 10-year anniversary. They're offering our tamariki a chance to demonstrate their creative skills. To take part - follow the link and complete the downloadable form. Share their efforts with us as well and you could win a family pass to attend one of our Open Night events ✨

🚀 Patch to the Future is now live - a mission patch design competition for Years 1–8 (ages 5-13) from our New Zealand Space Agency.

🛰️ This is a chance for students to explore space, science and New Zealand’s place in space through a mission patch design.

🔭 A mission patch is a small, circular design that represents an idea, goal, or mission. Astronauts wear them on their space suits to celebrate their mission – and now Kiwi kids can design one too.

✨ The winning design will be turned into an official New Zealand Space Agency patch – plus - the winner will get a limited edition New Zealand Space Agency jacket featuring their design!
