We’ve had the real privilege to host a couple of youth-led activities in our whare over the last week. Our friends celebrated the volunteers who help shape experiences of refugee background youth across the mutu. We also hosted four wonderful young and emerging artists who are using the arts to make environmental science really accessible and clever. The exhibition continues to be on this Thursday and Friday 10-3 and Saturday 11-2.

We also want to acknowledge and celebrate the many young people who’ve shared their stories, experiences, passions and creativity in our space over the past year. You know who you are! Thank you for all you do!

We often focus on the event or activity itself, but the reflection afterwards matters too. Today we got together to pause, debrief, celebrate, and share some good kai together.

Food insecurity is something many communities are already feeling, especially as climate impacts deepen. But alongside that, food is also where so much knowledge lives — across our cultures, our families, our histories. Food resilience lives in that knowledge, in how we adapt, share and care for one another. So this week was really about bringing that into the room and learning from each other. We had a wonderful evening of interactive theatre on the food system, and beautiful, nutritious and accessible kai and kōrero.
Ngā mihi to everyone who joined us and shared your kōrero with us, and special thanks to our partners and friends for your support Ira Bayley

Shared table, shared future: theatre, kai and kōrero

Join us for an interactive evening on the food system and shared kai and kōrero this coming Tuesday, 5 May.

This event is part of Climate Festival Pōneke and explores food resilience as shared wisdom across cultures and communities.

You are welcome to bring a meal and share your kōrero about your local or cultural foods that could sustain you, your whānau or community during an emergency. Or bring a poem, a recipe or a friend. However this is not essential and we welcome you to come as you are.

Kai is provided by Ekta NZ. For catering purposes please register for this event. Link in bio.

5 May is also the 2nd anniversary of the opening of Te Whare Manaaki o Toda Peace Gallery - another reason to come together over shared kai.

Earlier this week we talked about the importance of inclusive and relational emergency preparedness. Because when communities are connected, we’re better prepared to respond to disruptions. We’ve seen this many times over, so last night was a great opportunity to experience connection (thanks Oscar!) and hear indigenous experiences of building community, what inner city preparedness can look like and the role of faith-based communities in encouraging agency. In the end, it comes down to each of us.

Today, on International Volunteer Day, we celebrate the incredible community of volunteers who bring Te Whare Manaaki o Toda to life — from our thoughtful Advisory Group, to our dedicated Management Team, to every one of our wonderful hosts who welcome visitors into the gallery each week with warmth and heart.

The theme for International Volunteer Day 2025 — “Every Contribution Matters” — beautifully reflects who you are.
Every dialogue you hold, every hour you give, every idea you share, and every moment you spend creating a peaceful, welcoming space contributes to a stronger, more connected world. Your efforts, both big and small, ripple far beyond our gallery walls.

To all our volunteers — ngā mihi nunui ki a koutou.
Your generosity, your spirit, and your steady commitment to the transformation of self and our environment inspire us every day. We are deeply grateful for each and every one of you.

Last week we were honoured to co-host the Festival of Light and Launch Event with the Wellington Interfaith Council and the Religious Diversity Centre of Aotearoa, held at Whare Soka Buddha and Te Whare Manaaki o Toda.

It was a beautiful gathering of diverse faith traditions celebrating light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. Guests shared the meaning of light within their own traditions, the importance of unity, and the essential role faith communities play in advancing climate action.

The evening also marked the launch of RDC’s new publication:
Faith and Climate Action Guide: E Tū te mana o te ao – Building a Climate of Hope.

Together, we lit candles in our peace gallery and enjoyed the final day of the Tūmanako Children’s Artworks for a Peaceful World exhibition — a fitting reminder of the hope, responsibility and shared commitment we hold for future generations.

One of the guide’s co-authors described the evening beautifully:
“It is like everyone provided a thread for a beautiful tapestry – and this evening it all came together.”

Ngā mihi nui to all who contributed their light, wisdom and presence. We are grateful. 🌟
