very lucky pooch

Gerry Keene was deep underground on a US cave exploration adventure when he found Abby, curled up on a slab of cold rock, too weak to wag her tail or whimper.

The breeding ground of New Zealand's largest spider has been interrupted by human visitors, prompting DOC to close off the cave.

This is what the author has to say about the book.

Long before half of you knew me and the other half were not yet born, myself and a varying crew of cavers searched the North-West Nelson mountains for deep caves. I then went up to Papua-New Guinea for a few years where we drummed up an expedition to way in the back of the Muller Range above the Strickland River - about a week's walk from somewhere. We were out looking for 'The Deepest Hole in the World'.

So, this last year I teamed up with Paul Caffyn who had a lot of steam-powered black & white photos from that expedition with cool shots of the local people and the raw underbelly of an expedition in rough country for a month or so. I had a vague memory of that time so we did 'a book'. It's a good story; and I know this because I wrote 12 of the 15 chapters. There's adventure going up down and sideways, there's an old truck, the occasional whiff of aviation fuel, a trail bike 800 miles out on a road to nowhere and of course some dry humour. That's before you get to the funny bits.
