Joe Sheehan
Owner/Owned #1, 2026
Malacolla
11 x 8 x 5 cm

Part of our current exhibition Made, on now till 13 June.

This series of carved stone rings by Joe Sheehan considers the weight of extraction, ownership, and adornment.

Developed through time spent working in quarries, Owner/Owned emerged from an increasing awareness of the physical and psychological realities of stone extraction. Rather than presenting gemstone ownership as effortless luxury, the works return consequence to the act of wearing.

What a whirlwind the 2026 Aotearoa Art Fair was.

Huge congratulations to Ruby Wilkinson on an incredible presentation of Belle Plaine — and for everything that went alongside it, from media to talks. It was quite something.

A big thank you to Emily Hartley-Skudder for jumping in to help with our booth, straight off the back of her own exhibition in the gallery.

We’re also very grateful to everyone who contributed or supported the presentation: Caitlin Devoy for her new cast works and large sculpture on the Sculpture Trail; Sam Woo-Ram Choi for the beautiful table and stools; Graeme Douglas for hosting Ruby’s artist talk and podcast; Kāryn Taylor, Kereama Taepa and Alan Ibell for their works on the outer wall; the team at Sylvester for hosting Ruby in-store; and Ruby’s mum Jacqui for everything - including making sure she got to the fair on time 😘

And finally, congratulations to the Art Fair team on another strong and positive event. We know how much work goes into it — thank you Sue, Kate, Lucy, Bonnie and the wider team. We really appreciate it.

"Limbo is defined as a boundary, a state of uncertainty, or theologically, a waiting room between heaven and hell. The painting depicts four moths floating above a gentle sun, cut in half be an opalescent body of blue brushstrokes glimmers of pink reflected from the sky above."

Limbo, 2026, oil on canvas. 75 x 100 cm.
