Wayne Youle and Ans Westra first collaborated in 2013. Using sign vinyl material Youle added his risible touch to Westra’s silver gelatin prints, sparking a dynamic union between two artists who had great respect for each other.

‘The Best Stories Ever Told, Revisited’ showcased a set of photographs Westra captured in New York City in 1987, just before the stock market crash. For the first time, Youle used technology to alter Westra’s images, marking the start of a new phase of their collaboration. Thank you to everyone who visited the presentation at Jutta Gallery, Manhattan, New York.

We had over 2,000 people visit our Ans Westra exhibition of photographs made in 1963 for ‘Washday at the Pa’.

The location of the exhibition - Courtenay Creative - is the former site of the National Bank. Designed in the style of Chicago-esque neo-Classical architecture, the National Bank operated at 49 Courtenay Place for 67 years after opening in 1928.

This was the first of what will be annual exhibitions of Ans Westra works in the space, timed to coincide with the World of WearbleArt.

We look forward to welcoming visitors again next year from 17 September - 4 October 2026.

On show at the Suter Art Gallery Te Aratoi o Whakatū is Wayne Youle: Back in Five, a major exhibition surveying two decades of sculpture by one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s most distinctive contemporary artists.

Wayne Youle is known for his playful yet deeply considered approach to artmaking. Through bold design, humour, and sharp insight, Youle’s work explores identity,

memory, and the passing of time.

Curated by Dr Chelsea Nichols from the Dowse Art Museum.
