Nga Hua a Rehua by Maihi Potaka

New exhibition at lhorei Gallery 5th - 21st December

"Rehua is intimately entwined with the season of raumati (summer), with Te Waru o Rehua revealing its brilliance when the warmth takes hold. Rehua, a whetu and atua who resides in one of the highest realms once bestowed gifts of manu upon Tane. These manu a Rehua inspired my interpretations embodied in kowhaiwhai, capturing the movement and dynamic essence of each of these taonga.

This exhibition is a dedicated homage to Ngã Manu a Rehua and Ngã Potiki a Rehua (the flying beings of Rehua, and the infants of Rehua), flourishing abundantly in Te Waru.

Ngā Potiki embody the spirit of abundance and vitality thriving in the warmth of Raumati. Representing them in my works serves as a tribute to the cycle of life and the interplay between generations and the responsibility of nurturing and protecting the taiao. Amidst the backdrop of global warming's noticeably unprecedented peaks, it urges us to be aware of impending changes while also revelling in the celebration of this season."

Ihorei Gallery will join the celebrations for the 40 year anniversary of this landmark international event that changed the way Aotearoa and indeed, the world viewed and valued Toi Māori and Māori culture - forever.

Auē, He Atua symbolises the change, transition and transformation of Te Maori - A spiritual connection. A collective strength. A global statement. A stimulating homecoming. An enduring legacy.

New Exhibition "Auē, He Atua" opening at lhorei Gallery on the 12th of September. Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the iconic Te Mãori Exhibition "Auē, He Atua" honors the incredible legacy of Te Mãori and its influence on contemporary Maori art today. Hosted by lhorei Gallery, "Auē, He Atua" exhibits historical photographs of the journey of gathering the two mauri stones for Te Maori.

Manawatia ā Matariki ✨

Tērā a Puanga a Matariki ka rewa i te pae. Nau mai rā e ngā hua o te tau hou, Te Waka o Rangi kua tau!

Welcoming the Māori new year with a brand new exhibition at Ihorei Gallery, Te Waka o Rangi featuring father & son, Steve and Maia Gibbs (Ngāi Tāmanuhiri, Ngāti Rangiwaho, Rongowhakaata, Rongomaiwahine and Ngāti Kahungunu).

An exhibition dedicated to their grandparents and parents. The hard work and sacrifice given for the opportunity to express oneself through creative practice. As Matariki rises, we celebrate those who have passed on, we show gratitude for what we have and send our dreams to the future. This is the first time father Steve and son Maia have exhibited together side by side.

Over the coming posts we will showcase some of the incredible work from our current ringatoi-led exhibition Toitū! Below, we’ve shared some kōrero from the artist Taupuruariki Brightwell, about this piece and the whakaaro within it.

“To my enemies and assassins, Ka Ora, Ka Ora!”.

Te Rauparaha: Ngati Toa Rangatira, warrior, strategist, survivor, unbroken, founder Rangiatea Church, Tiriti Signatory and composer of the world famous haka Ka Mate. Pulling the finger, a powerful image that invokes many emotions and thoughts of tangata whenua and tauiwi alike, past & present.

By artist Ariki Brightwell descendant of Te Rauparaha, as her response to the kaupapa of Toitū, which invokes 200 years of fighting for our place on our own lands of Aotearoa. I believe it would be in his character to react in this manner if he were alive and saw the state of our nation today! We now live in a time more tense than ever, with growing disparity of our people now facing a hostile Government bent on pushing us to the brink of despair.

But like our ancestors we will not be broken. Governor George Grey attempted just that when he kidnapped Raha in his elderly age from his home at Taupo Nui Pa Plimmerton in 1846, bounding him by chains, hand and feet in Auckland and he failed to break him. And we will not be broken today, much so as the fires of the next generation burn as we did in the past at times of great tribulation.

In heart the idea came from my father, when brainstorming ideas of a mural I worked on next to Parliament, Bowen Street, which sat on my mind for some time. The artwork came to be when I was inspired by the March 2024 protest at Freyberg High, when our rangatahi faced Seymour as they wielded the power of Ka Mate in protest to his agenda of white supremacy. I say Ka Ora, Ka Ora to you!
