Curator Vicki Robson will take visitors on a tour of paintings and drawings by three artists – Frances Hodgkins, Peter Campbell and Graham Percy – who left New Zealand to make a name for themselves overseas.

Vicki is curator at Toi MAHARA with responsibility for the Field Collection which includes 24 works by Frances Hodgkins. She was formerly curator of European and International Art at Te Papa and has specialist interests in European fine prints and modern British art.

As part of the Kāpiti Coast Art Trail, the gallery will be open on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 October, Saturday 31 October and Sunday 1 November.

Add us to your itinerary to enjoy our current exhibitions, our shop stocking a wide range of Kāpiti artists, weekend art-making drop-in or come to the closing event for Land, Women and Rangatiratanga. Entry is free.

Ngai-kore-tua-mao is an ancestor of tī kōuka, a native plant also known as whanake or cabbage tree. As her name suggests, Ngai-kore doesn’t have direct descendants but is still an important figure in the whakapapa of the tī kōuka. This parallels the importance of takatāpui and other q***r people who don’t have tamariki by blood but still pass down their care, knowledge, and influence within whānau.

Pop in between 10:30am–2pm on Tuesday 20 October and meet some of our exhibiting artists whose work is on show in Land, Women and Rangatiratanga.

Adornment and object artist Neke Moa who predominantly works with pounamu, weaver and carver Mātene Te Putu Climie, weaver and curator Kohai Grace and weavers and tutors from Te Wānanga o Raukawa: Hinepūororangi Tahuparae, Ezra Bevan and Tracey Patete.

Peter Campbell was born in Wellington in 1937. He was apprenticed to Denis Glover at Wingfield Press where he learned his skills as a book designer and illustrator. He worked for School Publications in the late 1950s before leaving to live in London with his wife, Win Doogue, in 1960. There, he became embedded in literary life. His many professional skills as a designer, typographer, illustrator, journalist, children’s book author, editor and publisher made him ‘a collaborator sought out by writers, publishers and artists.’ (www.petercampbell.org.uk)

It's the school holidays and a great time to celebrate the work of year 5 and 6 school students from Our Lady of Kāpiti School whose work is on show at Toi MAHARA as part of their exhibition 'Ngā Hononga: the interconnectedness of all things'.

Drop in Tuesday-Sunday, 10am–4pm, entry is free.

You may also like to try out one of our free art-making activities on offer everyday during the school holidays.
