Switzers Museum

Switzers Museum Waikaia owes much of its history to gold which was discovered here in 1862.

At the peak of the rush Switzers (the town’s original name) had a population of around 2,000 including a large number of Chinese miners.

Five dollars doesn’t go far these days.

But here in Waikaia, it opens the door to gold rush history, pioneer stories, and a few unexpected treasures — including a very big bottle made of bottles!
If you’re passing through or planning a day out, we’d love to welcome you.

Anzac Day is coming and it's a time of quiet reflection here in Aotearoa.

On Anzac Day, we remember the courage and sacrifice of those who served — beginning with the Gallipoli campaign during World War I, and continuing through all conflicts and peacekeeping missions since.
It’s a day to honour not only those who never returned, but also the families and communities forever changed by their service.
Here at Switzers Museum, we are proud to hold a dedicated section remembering the local men and women who served. Their stories are an important part of our history, and of who we are today.
We welcome you to take a moment, visit, and reflect. We are now into winter hours. Open Saturday & Sunday 1-3pm

The museum foyer is looking a little different today (and yes we are open!) Welcome to our new pop-up gallery space.

Our first guest artist is Margaret Christie. Her work reflects a deep appreciation for rural life — from gardens in bloom to the quiet presence of animals and the changing moods of nature.
Painting across oils, acrylics and watercolours, Margaret captures the simple beauty many of us know so well.

Her exhibition is now open to view FREE during museum hours.
We hope you’ll call in and enjoy it.
