Bernie Hansen had been an active member and contributor to the SCAHC since 2002, around the time the planning began for the Richard Pearse anniversary airshow. A very intelligent, quiet, thoughtful man. A few months ago, while hosting one of our open days he talked about his aviation story, he said he always wanted to fly. He learned to fly in the mid 1970’s with the South Canterbury Aero Club 4 instructors - John Scott, Rex Furman, Graham O’Neil and Mike Tucker. The flights cost $40, or $120 per hour. It cost $360 to clear for first solo. Aircraft he flew in were 172 Cessna, Piper PA140, Piper Warner 150 hp, Tomahawk and a Piper Archer. He also took lessons in a Robinson R22 helicopter which he remembered at $150 a flight. Bernie followed his dream and made it happen, enjoying nearly 50 years of aviation. Bernie was also active in the Geraldine and Orari communities including Orari coronation hall, St John, Rock n Roll and Old time dancing group. Bernie passed away on Thursday 14th May. A big thank you to the people who have visited. Photo is from last weeks open day. Your door donations have enabled us to buy this safety equipment. The mini scaffold allows our volunteers to safely hang and arrange exhibits plus attend to general maintenance. Without your support we could not open the doors. Open Sunday 17.5.26 10am -4 pm. $5 Adult $2 child cash or internet banking only. We have a Rogallo SK series hang glider on display. An aviation sport very popular in the 1970-1980 and still has a strong following today. Around 1977 the CAA implemented regulations after too many accidents. Our workshop manager Jeff Macdonald aviation story began back in the early 1970’s flying at Clevedon near Ardmore Auckland. There were no instructors back then, very much a ‘fly by the seat of your pants’. Jeff had his fair share of tree landings. Back then Repairs and maintenance on the gliders was undertaken by the owners. Jeff also took glider lessons. £1 bought 10 tows behind a Tiger moth at Pukekiwiriki. Two of the photos are launches from the hills near Waimate. Can anyone tell us who they are? We would live to hear about your story. Waimate photos are held at the South Canterbury Museum. Chris Brownie ex RNZAF has been working closely with the family of the late Doug Drake updating and adding Brevet Club information to the book Doug wrote in 2002 for our museum. We now have copies for sale. Chris was the last president of the SC Brevet club. Chris being ‘the last man standing’ for the Brevet Club which has since closed. Chris has spent the last 5 years on this labour of love project. We thank you Chris for making this outstanding effort to enable copies to be produced for sale. A big thanks to you Chris.
