Bernie Hansen had been an active member and contributor to the SCAHC since 2002, around the time the planning began for the Richard Pearse anniversary airshow. A very intelligent, quiet, thoughtful man. A few months ago, while hosting one of our open days he talked about his aviation story, he said he always wanted to fly. He learned to fly in the mid 1970’s with the South Canterbury Aero Club 4 instructors - John Scott, Rex Furman, Graham O’Neil and Mike Tucker. The flights cost $40, or $120 per hour. It cost $360 to clear for first solo. Aircraft he flew in were 172 Cessna, Piper PA140, Piper Warner 150 hp, Tomahawk and a Piper Archer. He also took lessons in a Robinson R22 helicopter which he remembered at $150 a flight. Bernie followed his dream and made it happen, enjoying nearly 50 years of aviation. Bernie was also active in the Geraldine and Orari communities including Orari coronation hall, St John, Rock n Roll and Old time dancing group. Bernie passed away on Thursday 14th May.
