Peter Winnington, The Reserve, 2025, displayed in the South Canterbury Art Society Art Awards and Exhibition at the Aigantighe Art Gallery.
The 80th South Canterbury Art Society Art Awards and Exhibition is currently on display at the Aigantighe Art Gallery. Sponsored by DC Turnbull and Co Ltd, this exhibition has 92 artworks on display and it boasts a wide range of subject matter and methods of practice by 55 different local artists.
The Christchurch printmaker and gallerist, Marian Maguire, was the art award’s judge this year, and the award for ‘highly commended works on paper’ went to Peter Winnington for his watercolour, The Reserve.

Painting since he was a child, Winnington he was taught by Claude Brunsden at Boys High. Throughout his life Winnington has painted in oils, acrylics and watercolours – but he prefers watercolours, having enjoyed working in this particular medium for 30 years.

Executed on location, this watercolour painting depicts the reserve at Fairlie (close to the Opihi River). The two gum trees in the painting overshadow the tin shed and its adjoining fence, revealing a picturesque space to escape and sit in the shady cool on a warm sunny day.
Winnington is a member of the Temuka Art Guild, of Watercolour New Zealand, is a member of the South Canterbury Art Society, and during his career he has been a signwriter and a caricaturist for a newspaper. Winnington has long been an articulate ‘speaker’ of the visual language, and this shows in his paintings.

The South Canterbury Art Society Art Awards and Exhibition is on display at the Aigantighe Art Gallery until 12 October 2025.
