Paper-Works is a relaxed and interesting gallery based in the seaside village of Te Awanga in Hawke's Bay. Work displayed is rotated regularly to keep it fresh.

Paper-Works Gallery is a hidden gem in Hawke's Bay's art scene, exhibiting limited edition prints, paintings, photography, and sculpture from leading NZ and international artists. Owned and run by Annabel Sinclair-Thomson, who has been in the art world for over 30 years in Wellington before moving to Hawke's Bay to indulge her passion and set up an art gallery. Dealing mainly in works on paper by established and up and coming New Zealand Artists, Paper-Works offers drawers full of art you can explore with Bells as your knowledgeable and trusty guide! Paper-Works stocks a diverse variety of works that appeal to different tastes and budgets. Works include paintings, pencil drawings, original limited edition prints such as lithographs, etchings, screen prints, photography. All work can be viewed online through our website. Paper-works is also a good place to find information on establishing or building your collection. Let Bells become your personal buyer! When Gavin Chilcott encountered Giotto's 𝘊𝘳𝘶𝘤𝘪𝘧𝘪𝘹, painted around 1289 for Santa Maria Novella in Florence, he found himself looking at a work that represented a significant shift in the history of Western painting. Giotto’s Christ has physical presence and human vulnerability. Rather than an idealised symbol, we are confronted with a human body; one of the reasons the work was so radical in its time.

Gavin's coloured-pencil diptych, 𝘔𝘺 𝘋𝘢𝘶𝘨𝘩𝘵𝘦𝘳, 𝘮𝘺 𝘉𝘳𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳 + 𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘧 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘎𝘪𝘰𝘵𝘵𝘰 𝘤𝘳𝘶𝘤𝘪𝘧𝘪𝘹, takes that encounter somewhere rather more personal. There, Gavin, his daughter and his brother appear together; three Chilcott family figures appear like wood in a wonderfully Gavin-like collision of art history and autobiography. The very old, the very personal, and a healthy dose of familial melancholy.

For Josh Lancaster, some places are more than places. The dairy you stopped at after school. The road to the beach. The woolshed you’ve passed a hundred times. The view from the family bach.

From his Havelock North studio, he creates large acrylic landscapes that he describes as the “𝘨𝘦𝘰𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘱𝘩𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘩𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘵”: paintings of the places we call ours, and the memories and stories attached to them.

His bold lines, saturated colour and wonderfully recognisable sense of place have made his work instantly distinctive. A Josh Lancaster painting can make an ordinary stretch of road, a local landmark or a slightly battered rural building feel rather more significant than it did five minutes ago.

We have original paintings and limited-edition prints by Josh here at Paper-Works, including the one he’s holding here. Better still, this particular print has been signed by the artist himself.

Christchurch-based artist Nigel Buxton has spent much of his career exploring the space between observation and invention, from still life and interiors to music, illusion and the physical possibilities of paint.

Our current selection of Buxton’s work comes from 𝘛𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘗𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘓𝘪𝘧𝘦 (2010), a series in which he collages, composes and draws contrasting elements into imagined New Zealand landscapes. Think rural architecture. fanfare skies, costumed figures, familiar scenery behaving rather strangely.

The result is recognisably New Zealand but not, in reality, anywhere you could quite put your finger on. It is this slight displacement that makes the works so intriguing. You recognise the landscape, then look again.

For more than four decades, Sue Cooke Sue Cooke has been looking closely at the landscape, its trees, water, light, texture and changing forms.

Primarily a printmaker, Cooke works across monoprint, etching, lithography and collagraph, using traditional processes to create works that can feel both intensely intimate and remarkably expansive.

A journey to Antarctica in 2006 became the catalyst for seven years of work exploring ice, light and the fragile beauty of the frozen landscape. More recently, her attention has turned towards New Zealand's indigenous forests, with deforestation, regeneration, loss and deep time becoming recurring themes.

But perhaps the most compelling part of Cooke's work is its physicality. The texture of the plate, the layering of ink, the repetition of a mark you can feel the hand of the artist within the finished work.

In this behind-the-scenes glimpse, Gavin Chilcott creates the acrylic painting that will become one of his distinctive lampshades, carefully working the paint, then using a hairdryer to help bring the surface to life.

From the movement of the paint to the finished glow, each piece is a meeting of art, colour and craftsmanship.

𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗹𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿.
𝘊𝘰𝘢𝘴𝘵 by Stephen Allwood is all movement: waves breaking, driftwood scattered across the sand and a heavy grey sky beyond.

But look closer.

The landscape dissolves into thick, energetic brushstrokes. Paint becomes water. Marks become movement.

Then step back, and it all comes into focus again.
