From armed resistance to political negotiation!

After the New Zealand Wars, Rewi Maniapoto travelled with Te Kooti. By the late 1860s he recognised that Māori mana could not be restored through warfare alone and turned increasingly to negotiation and political strategy. His peace-making work contributed to the Waitara settlement of 1878.

The exhibition asks visitors to consider leadership not as a single moment, but as a series of difficult decisions made under pressure.

Ōrākau: leadership, resistance and remembrance!

During the Waikato Wars, Rewi Maniapoto led Ngāti Maniapoto forces against Crown troops. Although he had advised against making a final stand at Ōrākau, he led by example when the battle came. Ōrākau became an enduring symbol of Māori resistance and resolve.

Our October exhibition supports Rā Maumahara 2026 by encouraging careful reflection on the people, choices and lasting impacts of the New Zealand Wars.

Visit, pause and learn more at Te Whare Taonga o Te Awamutu Museum.
