Sir Mountford Tosswill Woollaston / Toss Woollaston (b.1910 d.1998) was born near Stratford and raised in rural Taranaki. A key figure in Aotearoa New Zealandโ€™s 20th century art history, Woollaston was inspired by Cรฉzanneโ€™s approach of carefully observing the landscape and using painting to reinterpret what he saw.โ
โ
After working in horticulture and studying art in Christchurch and Dunedin, he settled for a period in Mฤpua. In 1968, he moved to Riwaka, where he built a studio and produced a series of large panoramic landscapes for which he is best known.โ
โ
In dialogue with selected pieces from Amier Home Interiors, The Ivy Houseโ€™s grounding green rug, and organic ceramics by Riccardo Scott, this cosy lounge draws on the paintingโ€™s ochre and blue tones and layered textures, complimenting its strong yet balanced composition.โ

This exhibition is a collaboration between Toi Tauranga Art Gallery and Kathrine McDonald Design (.kathrine). โ

Billowing on the outside of Toi Tauranga Art Gallery is a gargantuan insect, a bug-shaped silhouette with almost hieroglyphic aspects. Peering into the interface, shapes and patterns both common and unusual to the human eye begin to register... What can you see, or can you make sense of with your own brain?

With a career as an artist spanning over sixty years, Richard Killeen is a senior figure in Aotearoa contemporary art. Formally trained at Elam in the 1960s, Killeen began his art career as a painter. In 1978 he developed a landmark series of aluminium cutout works, and by the next decade had begun to use a computer to generate images, leading to a mostly digital output from the 21st century.

Exploring the connection of starlight to the whakapapa (genealogy) of emotions like grief and isolation, Heidi Brickell (Te Hika o Pฤpฤuma, Ngฤi Tara, Ngฤti Kahungunu, Rongomaiwahine, Rangitฤne, Ngฤti Apakura, Airihi, Kลtirana, Ingarangi, Tiamana) presents an immersive new installation.

In ๐˜”ฤ๐˜ต๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜ถ๐˜ต๐˜ถ๐˜ณ๐˜ถ ๐˜›๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ค๐˜ฌ, the artist draws tender attention to Uru-te-Ngangana: an atua (deity) of Mฤori cosmology associated with light, the firstborn offspring of Ranginui (Sky Father) and Papatลซฤnuku (Earth Mother).
