September brings a series of talks and events to the gallery.

This Saturday, exhibiting artist Jaime Jenkins joins Curator Laree Payne for an in-depth conversation about 𝘈𝘭𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘛𝘰𝘶𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨, 11–11.45am in the Long Gallery.

Hear about the development of 𝘈𝘭𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘛𝘰𝘶𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨, as Jenkins discusses the works featured in the exhibition, exploring the thinking and making behind her creative practice.

𝘈𝘭𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘛𝘰𝘶𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 has been developed in partnership with The Dowse Art Museum (). Curated by Karl Chitham (Ngāpuhi), the exhibition will be presented at The Dowse in 2027.

Step behind the scenes with artist Jaime Jenkins as she installs ‘𝘉𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘴’, 2016–2026, for 𝘈𝘭𝘮𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘛𝘰𝘶𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨.

𝘉𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘴 is an ongoing collaborative work that Jenkins has developed over the past decade, bringing together contributions from artists including Séraphine Pick, Joshua Taylor, Marta Buda, and Findlay Buchanan.

Jenkins delicately strings and hangs each bell. Once suspended, the bells begin to twirl, a movement Jenkins describes as the bells’ “dancing.”

We are excited to announce the free annual 𝘊𝘭𝘢𝘶𝘥𝘪𝘢 𝘑𝘢𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘯 𝘔𝘦𝘮𝘰𝘳𝘪𝘢𝘭 𝘓𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 for 2026, on Tue 29 Sep, 5.30–7.30pm. With the generous support from the Claudia Jarman fund, Claire Regnault presents 𝘍𝘢𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘔𝘰𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘯 𝘞𝘰𝘮𝘢𝘯.

Claire Regnault is an award-winning author who specialises in the history of dress in Aotearoa New Zealand. She is particularly interested in what the history of dress can tell us about women’s lives, both real and ideal. She also happens to be the Exhibition and Programmes Manager at Tauranga Museum and an Honorary Research Associate at Te Papa, where she worked as a senior curator in the History department for fifteen years.

Claire is currently working on a new research project with Lizzie Bisley, Stephanie Gibson and Chanel Clarke on 𝘍𝘢𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘔𝘰𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘯 𝘞𝘰𝘮𝘢𝘯: 1920 𝘵𝘰 1949, which explores the lives of women during this dynamic period through a combination of art, design and dress.

Claudia Jarman (1908–1986) was a passionate art educator who inspired two generations of young people in Tauranga Moana to practise, appreciate and, as one former student recalled, “to see” art and design. Teaching at Tauranga District High School and later Tauranga Girls’ College, Claudia was also an active contributor to the city’s cultural life and a founding member of both the Tauranga Chamber Music Society and Tauranga Art Society.

The exhibition's title, 𝘐 𝘞𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘔𝘦𝘦𝘵 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘎𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘯, is both an invitation and a promise.
For artist Jess Dare, the garden is a place where generations continue to meet— where memory is cultivated through repeated acts of care and where the cycles of growth, decay and renewal mirror the rhythms of family life.

Flowers are enduring symbols of love, resilience and belonging, reminding us that what is lovingly tended continues to flourish across generations.

𝘐 𝘞𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘔𝘦𝘦𝘵 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘎𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘯 evolves from earlier exhibitions 𝘏𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘧𝘶𝘭 𝘰𝘧 𝘍𝘭𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘴… Funaki Gallery, Melbourne, 2023 and 𝘔𝘰𝘳𝘦 𝘛𝘩𝘢𝘯 𝘢 𝘏𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘧𝘶𝘭 𝘰𝘧 𝘍𝘭𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳𝘴, The National Gallery Ōtautahi, Christchurch. Artist Jess Dare lives and works in Adelaide, Australia, on the traditional lands of the Kaurna people and has a deep connection to her garden:

"I come from a long line of gardeners. As a child, our garden was a place of wonder and play: a sprawling vegetable patch scented with mint, abundant apricot, peach and nectarine trees. It fed us, entertained us and became my sanctuary. As an adult, my own garden has grown into a memory palace where plants hold stories, people and moments in time. I tend to them, water them and keep them alive, much like the memories they carry."

Jess Dare, 𝘐 𝘞𝘪𝘭𝘭 𝘔𝘦𝘦𝘵 𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘎𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘯 opens Sun 22 Aug, 10am.
