In the lounge setting of ๐๐ณ๐ช๐ท๐ข๐ต๐ฆ ๐๐ช๐ฆ๐ธ is Toss Woollaston, ๐๐ข๐ฏ๐ฅ๐ด๐ค๐ข๐ฑ๐ฆ ๐ธ๐ช๐ต๐ฉโฆ [๐๐ช๐ธ๐ข๐ฌ๐ข], 1974, a sweeping landscape spanning the back wall, a gift from a father to his daughter.โ
โ
Sir Mountford Tosswill Woollaston / Toss Woollaston (b.1910 d.1998) was born near Stratford and raised in rural Taranaki. A key figure in Aotearoa New Zealandโs 20th century art history, Woollaston was inspired by Cรฉzanneโs approach of carefully observing the landscape and using painting to reinterpret what he saw.โ
โ
After working in horticulture and studying art in Christchurch and Dunedin, he settled for a period in Mฤpua. In 1968, he moved to Riwaka, where he built a studio and produced a series of large panoramic landscapes for which he is best known.โ
โ
In dialogue with selected pieces from Amier Home Interiors, The Ivy Houseโs grounding green rug, and organic ceramics by Riccardo Scott, this cosy lounge draws on the paintingโs ochre and blue tones and layered textures, complimenting its strong yet balanced composition.โ
โ
This exhibition is a collaboration between Toi Tauranga Art Gallery and Kathrine McDonald Design (.kathrine). โ
โ
๐๐ณ๐ช๐ท๐ข๐ต๐ฆ ๐๐ช๐ฆ๐ธ is on now in the Pitau Gallery until 25 October. โ
