" The Light of Healing "
Tui Te Ao
Nĝati Tuwharetoa, Ngāti Raukawa

This work by Tui is a visual prayer to Rehua, the celestial being of love, healing, and eternal life.
The upward gorm represents spiritual ascent.
The meeting place between the spiritual and devine - where warmth and compassion flow from the heavens.

The deep tones speak of wairua and renewal - the life forces that burn softly within us through life's struggles.

The patterns Tui has used in her upward forms represent the timeless balance between strength and tenderness- reminding us that true healing is born from both.

Through this work , Tui has sought to honor Rehua's light not as distant or unreachable- but as a living reference that surrounds us, guides our hands and restores our hearts.

" Waiomatatini "
Jamie Jack Kino

Kawakawa type pounamu.
This stunning taonga has been carved by Jamie using traditional tīkanga and tooling.

A unique whiri binding pulls the tae toto ( colour of blood ) from within the depths of the stone - and brings further to the surface the kōrero , wairua and mauri this taonga represents.

On display currently as part of the current Exhibition by the Toi Shenanigans kāhui.

The Battle Between Tūmataenga and Tāwhirimātea
Sam Runga
Rongomaiwahine , Ngāti Kahungungu ki Te Wairoa
Whakairo and Acrylic on Board

Tūmatauenga is the diety of war people.
Angry over separation of Ranginui and Papatūānuku, Tāwhirimātea - god of weather ( wind ) waged war on his siblings. He subdued a number of them, but Tūmatauenga proved his equal.

From that time on , there has been an ongoing battle between the weather ( Tāwhiri ) and the people ( Tūmatauenga) .

Metaphorically speaking, Sam's toi pronounces how the weather represents the government of today, and Tū represents the people of Aotearoa.

A wild, windy day here in Tauranga Moana 🤭...full moon rising. Shake ups ✨️👀.

"Hinekauorohia"
Jamie Jack-Kino
Ngāti Ranginui , Ngai Te Rangi , Waikato
Acrylic on Canvas

Hinekauorohia was a child of Ohomairangi and Grandchild of Pūhaorangi.

She was the guardian holder of the sacred waters from all realms except Tikitikiorangi.
These were waters used in the tohi ceremony performed at each progression throughout a journey and to reflect on what had been completed.
Jamie's piece represents Hinekauorohia assisting Tāne by cleansing him with sacred waters during his journey to obtain the baskets of knowledge.

"Hinekauorohia allows us to look into the stillness of her reflecting waters to see the past with clarity, gaze at ourselves in the shimmering present , and with a finger-touch , fathom a fuffled glimpse of the future "

Te Ātaahuatanga o Ngā Ao e Rua
Maka Annandale
Ngāti Ranginui , Ngāti Huia , Ngai Tahu
Acrylic on Canvas

Maka's relationship with painting has always been one of self expression and his mahi toi is very accurate to that.
As tamariki, we are constantly being told to choose between the two binaries. Pants or skirts, trucks or Barbies , rugby or netball which is fine for some- but for others - they like to find the freedom and authenticity of dancing between it all.
Like the Manaia - a multifaceted creature who lives and moves between this and the spiritual world.
Iawhiti ātaahua is a self expression piece show casing the magical gift it is to be transgender.
Instead of having to choose between blue or pink , he gets the opportunity to find beauty in both 💘

The Domain of Tāwhirimatea

Te Rarawa, Te Aupourī

Acrylic on Canvas
12"x 24" Hex

Tauranga based artist Michelle Estall uses rhythmic hues of blues and deep ochre flaming fires wituin the winds to create this masterful piece " Domain of Tāwhirinatea "
Opposed to the separation of his parents Tāwhirimatea fled to the skies to be in the realms of his father Ranginui.
His offspring are the four winds that guide the seas , fan the fires, and carry the rain.
Without him, the world would be very silent , still and barren.

Michelle's work is not often available for purchase - run, don't walk !

Te Kohinga Atua - a gathering of gods - reflects on the stories, power and enduring presence of the Atua Māori. Participating artists were invited to draw inspiration from the creation narratives and the various atua who shaped the natural world, using these as a foundation for their own creative exploration.

Through diverse mediums and perspectives, the works reflect on themes of connection, kaitiakitanga, whakapapa, and the interplay between the seen and unseen realms.
Collectively these expressions honour the spiritual forces that continue to inform, guide and nurture the evolving relationship between people, place and the natural world within Te Ao Māori.

Toi shenanigans are a group comprised of Toi Paematua graduates from Te Wananga o Aotearoa and their former Kaiako Lila Te Kani.
Her mentorship, patience and gentle guidance have deeply influenced each artist’s journey in toi Māori. United by a shared respect for mātauranga Māori and a passion for creative expression, this exhibition celebrates their first time exhibiting together outside the classroom: a heartfelt continuation of the whanaungatanga that began under Lila’s guidance.
