Turned from quilted Eucalyptus “firewood!” To achieve this piece, I needed to turn it on two axes, so I could line up the centre of the vessel, due to the wings being on two planes.
3rd Place hollow Vessels category in the NAW's Art of Wood Competition 2026.

Great article in the latest NZ Creative Wood magazine covering the last five years of the Art of Wood competition. I am honoured to have 3 of my art pieces included. :-)

Lots more sanding to do but I'm happy with the design so far. After the sanding is finished I'll do some pyrography. 😀

Carving the centre piece. I covered the heads to make sure I didn't damage them while I was carving the bodies and heart.

Now to start rounding the edges and carving the centre piece.

A bit of a teaser! I will be entering this piece into a comp later in the year and I'll post more photos of the finished piece when the comp goes live. :-)

New name "Burning Daylight"
I decided to stipple the insides of the vessels with iridescent gold paint and do the top row of leaves with the same paint, which will make the piece glow. The other rows of leaves will be iridescent blue, green and gold.
