This week our featured artist is Mary Andrews.

Mary is a Fibre Artist, who has had over 30yrs selling and teaching classes in Nelson, previously operating from the Fibre Spectrum Handweavers Cooperative in Nelson.

Mainly working with wool, silk & feathers. Mary dyes and blends these raw materials into new uniqueness. Weaving colourful Rugs, Felted hats, bags, & clothing. The dye pot churning out the vibrant colour range of Emu feathers, to keep up the supply of her Felted Bird Mobiles.

She also uses the natural beauty of lustrous fleece, straight from the sheep, felted into rugs. And weaves designer rugs from the many natural shades of grey, browns, blacks, and whites

“Enjoying the renaissance of craft such as Spinning, Weaving and Felting, caused by the general craving for less mass processing of everything. The fine scarves & clothing made by felting fabric & fibre together, satisfies the necessity to recycle in our over produced world.

“I love the beautifully tactile process of my work, forming fibres into families of colour. This greatly therapeutic action for me, is beneficial both physically & emotionally.  My happy place is where time becomes irrelevant. ‘The Magic Zone’.”

Mary teaches feltmaking and finds it both fulfilling and fun to share the process with her various skills. If you're interested in taking a course with Mary get in touch or pop in store.

This week our feature artist is Frith Wilkinson.

Frith has been painting and exhibiting her oils and watercolours throughout New Zealand for the past 30 years and joined Paper Scissors Rock collective in 2025, along with her husband, jeweller Martyn Milligan.

Her recent works are detailed studies of insects, plants and bodies immersed in the landscape exploring themes of decay and renewal.
Each work draws upon her own symbolic language gathered throughout her years of painting, thereby linking all work past and present.

You can find Friths paintings along with a selection of high quality reproduction prints and cards as well as Martyn’s jewellery at Paper Scissors Rock Gallery or online at Redmanuka.co.nz

As part of the introduction to our artist members, this week meet Hesta Macready…she is a textile
artist and ceramic jewellery maker.

Her textiles include a range of handmade jackets (all one-off)
and free-motion machine embroidery that she applies to many forms of her artwork, in all dimensions.

She has always been a lover of textiles and finds it an ever evolving process of possibilities.

She loves to see her ceramic jewellery worn and loved by others, it gives it more life and purpose.
She finds working with clay meditative and absorbing. In all elements of her work, her natural
surroundings, pattern and texture inspire her. Working as an artist is all about the creative urge
and the making journey.

“When my work connects with someone, it is so satisfying and keeps me going on my creative
path. It’s important to me that we have beautiful, handmade things in our lives, and that we can
connect through art and creating”

You can see the full range of Hesta’s work at Paper Scissors Rock gallery, including originals and
reproduction art prints of her textile work.

Check us out next time you’re in town….so many beautiful things to feed your soul!
