Silver Fern Gallery

Silver Fern Gallery Silver Fern Gallery is currently online only until we relocate. www.silverferngallery.co.nz We became Silver Fern Gallery following our move to Queenstown.

Silver Fern Gallery was established in 1993 by the current owners, Avril Dolman and Graeme Bates. Originally called The Emporium, and then 38 Buckingham Street, the business became an Arrowtown icon. The 38 Buckingham Street name reflected our Arrowtown address and our wagon wheel logo was derived form the premises’ original use as a coach builder’s workshop. The business ceased trading at Arrowt

own in May 2008 when the leased premises were redeveloped. After 15 years in Arrowtown, Avril and Graeme decided the redeveloped premises would no longer serve their purposes and opted for change of scenery and relocated their business to Church Lane in Queenstown. Church Lane is a precinct of galleries, small retail, bars and restaurants, and boutique accommodation. It has a casual, walk around feel that suits the business mix of the area. The new name reflecting our evolution to a Tourist Retail store specialising in New Zealand made and themed art and craft items.

About Pekapeka:

This piece represents New Zealand's only native land mammal the pekapeka (bat). Pekapeka symbolise spiritual protection and guardianship and with two outward-facing heads connected through one body, the symmetry of this piece creates a harmonious sense of balance and stability.

Here goes -

I did have two excellent advisors pretty much from day one. They were one of four recommended to me by a Business Consultancy Agency based over in Wanaka. I not only chose them for their expertees, enthusiasm and good track record, but they would donate 10% of their fees to a monkey sanctuary based in the Amazon Jungle. It appealed.

Covid had just hit the world by storm. The sanctuary is totally charity funded, and rescue monkeys were crying out for care. An unknown virus was sweeping through the closely guarded isolated sanctuary deep in the jungle. As a result, I was left on my own here in Queenstown to design the website. Intermittent communication in the times they left the Amazon to stock on supplies were certainly not brief, but we all got there in the end.

Looking back, it was a huge leaning curve for everyone involved, and a lot of fun - even though I gained a few more grey hairs from the process. (OK, more than just a few).

Instruction was given by zoom meeting sitting at my desk here in Queenstown New Zealand from my advisors in a rented flat in Colombo Brazil with wild Howler Monkeys screaming down the line. (Loud) But we got there! And what made it all worthwhile was the exceptional comments I receive daily from our happy customers. Thank you!
