The Film Poster Gallery

The Film Poster Gallery Our focus is the collection, preservation and display of original theatrical advertising material.

Initially some 25 or so years ago we were solely focused on collecting titles that played a part in our own childhoods, however as our collection grew, we gained a far greater appreciation for older titles, be it for their stunning hand drawn artwork or the merits of the movie itself. As a result we now spend all of our spare time hunting out and saving these original pieces of art from being lost

forever. Some titles we restore, others we display ‘as found’ to help tell the story of the piece. We set up our store to allow us to sell some of the items that are duplicated within our collection/archive, with sales providing us with funding for the purchase, restoration and permanent display of additional pieces that we feel would be of interest to film buffs, art lovers or those who generally have an interest in vintage items from yesteryear.

We start the mammoth task of moving into our new home next week, immediately followed by a long overdue (and much needed) holiday. This unfortunately means that will be pausing all shipping from the 5th of June to the 5th of July.

Therefore, any order placed after midday on the 3rd of June (NZ time), cannot be shipped until we return on the 6th of July. Apologies for any inconvenience.

One of two restoration pieces to return to our collection this month.

A 1924 US 3 Sheet (41" x 81") for Tell it to a Policeman.

The story of a woman who was wild about men in uniforms and a man who couldn't become a messenger boy, so became a policeman just to get a uniform!

Some more restoration pieces return to our collection.

This time a pair of US '3 Sheets' (41" x 81")

Anybody's Blonde (1931) - When a boxer is murdered a newspaper reporter tries to frame the boxer's sister, a nightclub owner, for the crime. This poster is the smaller partner of a '6 Sheet' that we've previously had on display (see additional pic).

The Man from Hell's Edges (1932) - The Sheriff offers Bob Steele a deputy's badge, which he gladly accepts after he meets the sheriff's daughter, Nancy Drexel.

Another restoration completed for my collection.

This time an Australian 'long' daybill for the 1928 silent era western 'The Phantom City', with artwork by Wynne Davies.

The story sees a cowboy working with a mysterious figure called "The Phantom Horseman" in order to prevent a criminal gang from stealing a gold mine.

A couple of early Australian 'long' daybill posters now in the final stages of restoration by Jaime Mendez in California.

Rin-Tin-Tin in 'Jaws of Steel' from 1927, where the famous canine is falsely accused of being a vicious killer and he has to somehow vindicate himself despite being unable to speak.

Along with 'England Prepared'. The late 1939 British home front moral boosting documentary, aimed at reassuring the general public that the country would withstand the expected Luftwaffe attacks, just as it did in the soon to follow Battle of Britain and the Blitz.

Following on from my last 'Reckless Living' post. Another restoration has just been completed for my future exhibition by one of the best restorers in the business, Jaime Mendez in California. https://restorationbyjm.com/

This time it's an Australian 'Long' Daybill for the 1938 crime drama 'Numbered Woman'.

Nice to end my 2025 on a high. On that note I wish you all well for whatever 2026 has in store and hope that your celebrations tonight go as planned (and your hangovers are mild!). Many thanks for your continued support and I'll speak to you all again next year :)

One of my personal collection pieces, a rare US 3 Sheet for the 1931 Universal crime drama 'Reckless Living'. Which is currently being worked on by one of the best restorers in the business, namely Jaime Mendez in California.

I'm currently preparing for a large exhibition in late 2027 (yes two years away!), where I will be lending out my silent to early talkie era collection to my local Lakes District Museum for a month long public exhibition. All donations on entry will go the museum.

Therefore, with so many 3 & 6 sheets yet to linenback & restore, I'm having to send 5 large format multi-sheet posters away at a time (NZ-US shipping fees are nuts at the moment!). So hopefully more pics to follow soon.
