Vaiaso o le Gagana Sāmoa - It's Sāmoa Language Week, and at Pātaka we would like to highlight the work of AXEL IVA, an artist featured in IHI, an exhibition curated by Israel Randell and Ioana Gordon-Smith.

AXEL hails from the villages of Apolima and Iva, and was raised in Mangere, Tāmaki Makaurau. This is VILT, Axel's fale umu, an outdoor cooking house commonly found in Sāmoa. When Axel's father moved to Aotearoa, New Zealand, he built his own fale umu in the driveway of his Māngere home—a way to bring a piece of Sāmoa with him.

'Like his father’s construction, VILT balances nostalgia and reinvention. Made from materials more commonly used for roofing or greenhouses, it differs greatly from the more robust fale umu found in Sāmoa or what Axel describes as the “janky eyesore” of its Māngere version. Its fragile, ethereal form evokes a delicate tether to a sense of “home,” felt through memory or imagination. Its title blends family surnames while also nodding to “Virtual Instructor-Led Training,” a form of learning that happens at a distance.'

The 2026 theme for Samoa Language Week is "‘E afua mai i mauga tetele manuia o le 'nu'u - From the high mountains are the blessings of the village."

Emerging from Mangere Mountain, this construction is truly a blessing for our village here in Porirua.

Three emerging artists explore ihi — a charged inner force — by moving familiar forms into unfamiliar roles.

Robyn Kahukiwa’s artworks have made a difference to Māori. They have provided not only beauty and strength but inroads into our mātauranga, and the multi-layered, inter-generational and ever-evolving stories that are part of our cultural landscape. That landscape is the mainstream of Aotearoa New Zealand.

𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗲𝘂𝗺 𝗗𝗮𝘆 | May 18, 2026

▪️ It is our pleasure to highlight one of Porirua's most loyal residents, the late Neil Penman. In 1985, Neil began a project to take portraits of local personalities who had contributed to the development of Porirua City over the previous 25 years, later exhibiting this body of work at Porirua Museum. Since his passing and to honour his wishes, the Penman whānau donated his substantial body of work to Pātaka Art Gallery + Museum, and we will be exhibiting many of these works in 𝗧𝗼𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗼𝘄’𝘀 𝗵𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀: 𝗽𝗵𝗼𝘁𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝘀 𝗯𝘆 𝗡𝗲𝗶𝗹 𝗣𝗲𝗻𝗺𝗮𝗻 (8 August–8 November, 2026).

▪️ Here we see a snapshot into the collection process of preparing such a body of work for exhibition and preservation, including a shot or two of the man himself as seen in image 01. As we prepare the negatives for digitisation, we hope to make his incredible archives more accessible to the public.

▪️ Ngā mihi nui to the wider Penman whānau for their gift of these taonga to the city of Porirua.
