EOF Gallery is pleased to introduce our next artist on show, Joseph Rowntree.

Born and based in Aotearoa, Rowntree’s practice is deeply informed by the landscapes and communities that have shaped him. From suburban Auckland to 15 years shearing across Canterbury, Hawke’s Bay, and Australia, his experiences have forged a distinctive visual language grounded in place, memory, and identity.

Now working from Heretaunga, Hawke’s Bay, Joseph creates raw, emotive paintings that explore the complexities of contemporary life in Aotearoa. His figurative works move beyond likeness, seeking deeper truths through vulnerability, observation, and lived experience.

Balancing tenderness with tension, Rowntree’s paintings invite reflection on who we are, where we come from, and the stories that connect us.

Join us for the opening night on Friday 19 June at 6pm.

We look forward to welcoming you.

“It was only one night,
but inside it, everything felt possible.

In that liminal space where time softened
and imagination ran wild—
a future forming,
quietly, briefly, unreal, only a fantasy.

By morning, it was all gone”
