Honouring D-Day: Remembering the Sacrifices Made for Freedom πŸŒΉπŸš‚

Today, 6 June, we pause to mark the anniversary of the D-Day landings in 1944. We remember the immense bravery of the Allied forces who stormed the beaches of Normandy, launching the operation that changed the course of World War II. As guardians of South Canterbury's history, we reflect on the incredible courage of all those who served overseasβ€”including the many railway workers, engineers, and local community members who left their regular lives behind to fight for the freedom we enjoy today. Their dedication, sacrifice, and spirit will never be forgotten.

We are absolutely thrilled to announce a new addition to our railway family! Please give a warm welcome to our "new to us" Diesel Shunting Locomotive, Tr 880!

While our steam locomotives often steal the spotlight, dependable diesel shunters like Tr 880 are the absolute backbone of our day-to-day operations, helping us move rolling stock, assist with track maintenance, and keep the site running smoothly behind the scenes.

A massive thank you to everyone involved in making this possible, from the logistical planning to the hands-on heavy lifting. Our volunteers are already itching to get their hands dirty and get her settled into her new home.

Check out these incredible photos of the legendary Ab699. This locomotive leaves behind an amazing legacy, having spent decades hauling freight and passengers across New Zealand.

We are so lucky to still have this 100-year-old piece of Kiwi history operating today. Who remembers catching a steam train back in the day? πŸ‘‡
