Discover Clevedon’s History on Foot
The charming McNicol Homestead and Museum was the perfect setting this morning for the official launch of the brand-new Clevedon Village Heritage Trail.
This wonderful project is a true community effort—brought to life through a partnership between the Clevedon Association and the Clevedon & Districts Historical Society, with generous support from the Franklin Local Board.
Attendees enjoyed words from Alan Cole (Franklin Local Board), Philip Bell (Historical Society President), and Josephine Elworthy (Clevedon Association), before local historian Jessie Munro cut the opening ribbon.
About the Trail:
The trail is an 8km walking loop connecting 19 historic sites. Each stop features a physical marker with a QR code. Simply scan it with your smartphone to unlock historical photographs, stories, and deep-dives on the Clevedon Heritage Trail website.
With Clevedon Village experiencing so much modern change, it is fantastic to see some of its rich heritage showcased in this trail. The concept beautifully builds on an earlier collaboration between the association and society “A 150 Years On A Historic Village Ramble” compiled by Fraser Murray for the 150th celebrations of village back in 2003.
The launch was a fitting finale to the Auckland Heritage Festival in Clevedon. It followed an insightful talk by Jessie Munro titled "The Valley that Fed a City” the story of the part that the Wairoa River Valley had in feeding the growing city of Auckland and led to the development of Clevedon Village. Jessie’s incredible two-volume history, Voices of Belonging: A History of Clevedon Te Wairoa, is available for purchase at the McNicol Homestead Museum.
