Dargaville Museum

Dargaville Museum Telling the stories of the Kauri Coast. Stories from Maori, Dalmatian, gumdiggers, pioneers and maritime lives. Contact us for further details.

Our stories tell of how the district has developed through the years: from the 16 metre long pre-European Maori canoe through to the replica gum-diggers camp; from shipwreck relics recovered from the coast to the masts of the ill-fated Greenpeace protest ship Rainbow Warrior. Our community Museum provides a number of outstanding displays to interest the whole family. Situated in Pou Tu o Te Rangi

Harding Park overlooking the mighty Northern Wairoa River and Dargaville township, the adjoining Lighthouse Function Centre is available for hire for weddings, conferences, family celebrations, meetings.

Dargaville Museum is open every day over Kings Birthday Weekend. Hours from 9 to 4.

These banners on display at Dargaville Museum hold the names of those people from The Northern Wairoa who went to fight in World War 1. The names were collected by the late Kevin Lewis and checked against those held in the Auckland Museum. In 2020 we located through the Commonwealth Graves Commission those who had lost their lives.
Volunteers spent several days embroidering small crosses by their names.
At the opening of the exhibition we were reminded of those who survived and returned home only to suffer and often die early from their wounds and illnesses.
Overall, approximately 24,000 New Zealanders who fought for us were physically wounded or suffered PTSD and other psychological issues.

Lest We Forget.
