Discover the story of the saree! It’s said that the saree is one of the most elegant and timeless garments in the world. It’s a long piece of fabric, usually 5 – 6 metres, worn by women and draped gracefully around the body and paired with a blouse and petticoat.

For centuries, sarees have been worn across India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, representing tradition, femininity, and cultural heritage.

Thanks to a grant from our Creative Communities Scheme, you can delve into the rich history of this traditional garment at an event at the Nelson Provincial Museum on Trafalgar Street in Nelson.

‘Saree Stories’ is an initiative of the local Experience India group and runs from 1.30 pm until 3.30 pm on Saturday 5 September. Entry is $5, and spaces are limited, so register at rebrand.ly/5935pxn.

There will be live draping demonstrations, question and answer sessions, and opportunities for a hands-on, close-up saree experience.

If your group or organisation is interested in applying for a grant to run a creative event, applications for the next round of Creative Communities Grants are open now until 10 November. Visit tasman.govt.nz/creative-communities.

Only a few spots are left for Saree Stories, an interactive cultural experience from Cultural Conversations and Experience India, being held at Nelson Provincial Museum alongside exhibition Unravelling the Saree: Beyond the Fold.

Come along to see, touch and explore different sarees up close, watch a live draping demonstration, ask questions, and discover the craftsmanship, traditions and stories behind this iconic garment.

Our Vision: Rangatahi, Imagining the Future, Shaping Tomorrow brings together work by young people from across the region, sharing their hopes, fears, ideas and visions for the world they want to help create.

Presented with the Nelson Youth Council the exhibition celebrates rangatahi creativity and leadership, and the importance of young voices in shaping what comes next.
