With sadness, we acknowledge the passing of Barry Cleavin (1939–2026). Our aroha is with whānau, friends and all those whose lives he touched. Barry leaves an extraordinary legacy in the arts of Aotearoa, particularly within printmaking and intaglio processes.

Thanks to the generosity of Ann and John Hercus, who gifted their entire collection of Barry’s prints to the Gallery over the years, his work continues to hold an important place at The Suter and within our collection. The Gallery presented The Exact Enigma (2015) and A Curious Perspective (2023), exhibitions that celebrated Cleavin’s mastery of printmaking, incisive intelligence and distinctive way of seeing the world.

Did you know?

The Suter Gallery began through the support of the whole community — artworks and whenua were gifted, and contributions came from across Te Tauihu. It was generosity that built the whare.

More than 125 years later, that spirit continues. Our gallery exists because of generations of people who have supported it, cared for it, and made it part of the life of Whakatū.

It is a privilege to be kaitiaki of Nelson’s historic art collection, and an even greater honour to share some of these works in the gallery this month as we begin our permanent collection exhibition.
