The Suter Art Gallery Te Aratoi o Whakatū is the public art gallery for the Nelson Tasman region. The Suter complex also includes a theatre, cafe and shop.

Suspended outside the gallery, Kate Newby’s hand-blown glass hangs in mid-air between the building and the nearby trees.
The glass catches the light and casts reflections all around.

As the exhibition enters its final week, we celebrate the work of Kate and Stuart Newby — father and daughter — and their shared mihi to the connections of te taiao — the natural world — our home and our place within it.

Exactly ten years ago, The Suter reopened following major redevelopment — beginning yet another new chapter in the life of our whare.

On this day, a decade ago, taonga were laid into the whenua beneath the gallery floor at sunrise. As the newspaper recorded at the time, “The ceremony concluded with the first of the rising sun’s rays striking the top of the old Suter building.” A meeting point between old and new.

Today, we celebrate our transformation through the years. Our community have known The Suter through old galleries and new spaces, changing exhibitions and familiar artworks, openings, conversations and countless returns.

Ten years on, the whare is still being shaped — ake, ake, ake.
10 years since reopening — October 2016–2026.

We’re warming up for Clay Week here at The Suter Gallery!
From 3–9 October, Clay Week brings workshops, film screenings, talks and our toi uku community together from across the region and Aotearoa.

We share a huge mihi to the Clay Week team for bringing it all to life — and we’re looking forward to kicking off the week with our Seasonal Opening, celebrating the world of uku (clay) through our new exhibitions.

ARCHIVE STORIES
Journey back in time through the life of the Pastorius Waller Theatre. Here we see the newly completed Stage Two Cinema, built in 1987 after live performances and local events began to overflow in the Gallery.

The space was originally used as a cinema and for small live shows. Decades on, the whare and its stories continue.

A special moment was marked in the Gallery as we gathered for the blessing of Te Arahou | Seen Anew.

We took a moment to acknowledge the many stories held within the exhibition and to celebrate a new chapter for The Suter Collection, as a series of artworks return to the Gallery.

On 5 October, Seen Anew officially opens alongside our other exhibitions at Te Aratoi o Whakatū.

The Suter Gallery is home to almost 1,600 artworks in Te Tauihu’s regional art collection.

The collection has been built and cared for through generations generosity from our artists and community. It holds countless stories of Te Tauihu and Aotearoa — and belongs to everyone.
