We’ve been loving exploring Ian Scott’s exhibition Painting in New Zealand which is currently on show at The Suter. Today we looked at the iconic painting of Rocks Rd by Irvine Major ‘Summer in Nelson’ and took direction from Ian Scott for our interpretation. This is such a beautiful watercolour by one of our after school students. 😍.gallery

This week Suter Education is gaining inspiration from the national art gallery educators’ symposium in Whanganui. We are gaining so much rich knowledge about inclusive practices for engaging our tamariki and community in our galleries. Looking forward to bringing it home ❤️

We have such a beautiful environment to learn in at The Suter. This week youth students have been learning about showing space and tone in their artwork. We made these fantastic works showing The Suter’s foyer. 😍The Suter Te Aratoi o Whakatū

Drawing in the gallery is an absolutely absorbing activity. Our Monday rangitahi spent time carefully observing the ceramic pieces in the exhibition Fired Forward and practiced their pen drawing techniques. It’s hard to believe most of these students are intermediate aged. The Suter Te Aratoi o Whakatū

Our youngest after-school art students had fun exploring characters with collage this week. Can you spot P**i Longstockings? 🥰

This term in Suter Kids Club we’ve been creating artworks inspired by people, responding to the wonderful exhibition We Are Young and its photographs of young people across Aotearoa.

For our final session we had fun experimenting with collage. We also discovered that Suter art tutor Lily Emo Lily Emo has just published a book Leslie Mitchell and her beautiful collages were the perfect inspiration for our own creations. Congratulations, Lily! 💛

There was a delightfully social atmosphere at The Suter this afternoon as Room 15 from St Joseph’s School visited the We Are Young exhibition. The rangatahi took their time exploring the artworks and engaged in thoughtful, considered conversations about what they saw. It was delightful to witness their curiosity, insights, and enthusiasm for the exhibition.

At Suter Kids Club after school art, we had fun creating these big acrylic paintings, mixing our own colours and using giant expressive brushstrokes.
