Two years ago, the Faraday Museum hosted Generations of Fun โ€” a special exhibition showcasing vintage and modern toys side by side. From timeless classics to todayโ€™s favourites, it sparked memories (and smiles!) across all ages.

Here are a few photos from the exhibition that brought out the kid in everyone. ๐Ÿงธ๐Ÿš‚

๐Ÿ“ปโœจ Tech Throwback Tuesday โœจ๐Ÿ“ป

On 17 November 1921, New Zealand heard its very first radio broadcast with speech and music โ€” a huge leap from the harsh buzz of Morse code.

The breakthrough came from Robert Jack of the University of Otago, using a homemade transmitter built from navy surplus parts.

Thereโ€™s no recording of that original moment, but Radio New Zealand later recreated it in a 1972 documentary celebrating 50 years of broadcasting.

Want to see early radios up close? Pop into the Faraday for a glimpse into NZโ€™s broadcasting history! ๐Ÿ“ป

โšก Historic Powerhouse Fun Facts!

Did you know the Faraday Street powerhouse was built between 1911โ€“1913 as Napierโ€™s very first municipal power station? It didnโ€™t just light up homes โ€” it powered the cityโ€™s tram system, including the line out to Ahuriri! ๐Ÿš‹

Inside, youโ€™ll find a rare 1923 Fullagar diesel generator โ€” believed to be one of only two ever made, and possibly the only one still in existence today. ๐Ÿ”ง

After being decommissioned, the building was saved by passionate locals and reopened in 1993 as the Faraday Centre โ€” now a hands-on technology museum where Napierโ€™s electrical history comes to life. ๐Ÿญโœจ

Come and see where the cityโ€™s power story began!

Do you remember our Polyphon in the Faraday Shop? ๐ŸŽถ

One of our beloved Polyphons has been playing for almost a century! While itโ€™s stood the test of time, it does occasionally need a little care. Thankfully, weโ€™re incredibly lucky to have talented volunteers who can fix what the rest of us canโ€™t.

If youโ€™d like to see (and hear!) this beautiful masterpiece from a century ago, pop into the Faraday Shop and give it a go. You wonโ€™t want to miss it!

Napierโ€™s best-kept secret

The Faraday Centre is amazing - an Aladdinโ€™s Cave of marvellous machines, improbable contraptions and fabulous, far-fetched (and far-out!) gadgets. Variously described as โ€œa hidden gemโ€, โ€œa giant man shed... brilliantโ€ and โ€œa she shed for the agesโ€ (yep, that confused us too), we have a five-star rating on TripAdvisor* that we work hard to keep. Weโ€™re a museum of technology with a hands-on focus. Meaning? Rather than merely reading and looking at things, we encourage you to touch - to push buttons, pull levers, crank handles, and โ€œYesโ€ you can even take photoโ€™s, which makes us a fun place to visit.

Thereโ€™s another thing weโ€™re very proud of. Among our most valuable treasures are our staff - who are almost all volunteers, they love it to bits - and want to share its wonders with you. * Donโ€™t just take our word for it. Here are a few of our TripAdvisor reviews - see bit.ly/Faraday-Centre-TripAdvisor for more: ๐Ÿ’– Children's hands-on heaven with old technology ๐Ÿ’– Great place to visit with the grandkids ๐Ÿ’– Great place for the kids . ๐Ÿ’– Brilliant Museum ๐Ÿ’– An amazing find! ๐Ÿ’– Fantastic, highly interactive, museum ๐Ÿ’– A hidden gem for all the family with lots of bangs and flashes ๐Ÿ’– Well worth a diversion ๐Ÿ’– Best of Napier ๐Ÿ’– Tremendous ๐Ÿ’– Loved this place ๐Ÿ’– Great childrenโ€™s entertainment even for retired children ๐Ÿ’– Low key gem, a Napier highlight for us ๐Ÿ’– Very interesting and Quirky ๐Ÿ’– highlight of this nerd's day ๐Ÿ’– Fascinating engineering and electrical artefacts ๐Ÿ’– Absolutely Fantastic ๐Ÿ’– Amazeballs ๐Ÿ’– A great hands-on museum not just for the technically minded ๐Ÿ’– Great trip down memory lane ๐Ÿ’– Hidden treasure! ๐Ÿ’– Must see for all ages ๐Ÿ’– You won't want to leave ๐Ÿ’–Electrifying ๐Ÿ’– You must, it's worth it ๐Ÿ’– Unique & fascinating ๐Ÿ’– a wonderful and important step back in time ๐Ÿ’– Hands-on entertainment for hours! ๐Ÿ’–(Better than Paris?
