ECOSOPHY brings together artists whose embrace an eco-philosophical perspectives grounded in mindful stewardship of the Earth.
They deliberately turn away from conventional supplies with heavy footprints, transforming the overlooked such as reclaimed and recycled scraps, or are returning to traditional methodologies working with natural and biodegradable elements like plant fibres and soil. With tactile, process-driven practices, the artists consider the environmental impact of their work and through this lens, they create pieces that not only resourcefully utilise materials but also honour their origins and traditions.

Shine brings together art that radiates with the luminosity of both material and artistic spirit. These pieces are fashioned from mediums that gleam—glass, metal, ceramics, and digital audio-visual screens. Matter explores how physical shine becomes a metaphor for creative brilliance. Here, objects do not simply reflect light; they embody sparks of innovation and the glow of human ingenuity. Together, these artists illuminate Shine as both a celebration of material radiance and the luminous talent of those who dare to shape, transform, and transcend.

WE HAVE EXCITING NEWS!! 👀
Announcing Matter Gallery’s October Residency. 📢
Artist Call-Out for applications are now open!
-
Matter Gallery invites artists with practices that address sustainability and the environment to apply for our spring residency. We are keen to work with someone who is investigating how their art practice can be kind to the planet, whether a single creative, a partnership, or even a small collective.
-
What’s on offer? You will have the opportunity to use our gallery space (50square metres) as a studio for 14 days (14-27 October) to create work for exhibition with us. There is a modest stipend of $1500 to support your time, and a separate materials budget, plus a small fee for a public talk. What are we looking for? Our selected candidate(s) should have or be developing a sustainable artmaking practice, incorporating natural or bio-materials, and an approach which focuses on response/ collaboration with nature within Tauranga Moana’s biosphere.
-
Full details on our website, link in bio. Applications must be received by midnight on Sunday 28 September. Applicants will hear back from us by Friday 3 October.
-
-
Thank you 🙏 and and your advisory panel for funding the residency under the Creative Communities Scheme, we are so excited and grateful to be able to offer this opportunity to local artists.

Now showing at Matter
NATASHA AIKO COUSENS
one, three, four, ten
2021-2022
Hand-built ceramic sculptures and objects, hand sewn lace & haberdashery, faux
fur & flowers, resin, plaster, found stool, fiberglass, wood, paint.
-
Natasha Aiko Cousens is a multi disciplinary artist primarily working in clay.
Having studied restoration at Portsmouth University, Natasha later diverged
from traditional crafts, such as gilding and encaustic tiles, to create mixed
media sculptures and installations.
-
‘One. Three. Four. Ten.’ is an installation born of notions about memory,
impermanance, and loss. Comprising of various materials, these stylized forms
of flora, fauna, and object, are both familiar yet surreal, blurring the lines
between reality and that of the otherworldly. In this work you will find rabbits
and branches, thorns and flowers, along with a stool, rug, a window, objects
common in our daily lives. Revealing themselves in a fragmented dreamlike
existence.

There will be a talk by curator Liz Cooper at 10.30am on Saturday 6 September in relation to the current exhibition, FIBRE. Liz has specialised in art textiles for over 20 years, and delivered exhibitions in Aotearoa, Australia, Ireland, Spain and the UK.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Dreams and intentions, connections and loss, nature and industry, the real and the imagined; these are deep and moving inspirations and themes explored by the artists in Matter’s third project FIBRE. Textile and fibre have long been a powerful medium for expressive story-telling, being both familiar and exotic. Cloth is the stuff that surrounds us for daily and ceremonial use, as garments, furnishing, hangings and utility. The versatility of thread and fabric, yarn and cloth enable layered and complex narratives. FIBRE looks at three established artists who use this compelling medium in very different ways: Natasha Aiko Cousens, Lois Parish Evans and Lea-Anne Sheather.
