Isabella Beeton, better known as Mrs Beeton, became a household name in the 1800s thanks to her famous book, Mrs Beeton's Book of Household Management.

Published in 1861, her guide was much more than a cookbook β€” it was a complete manual for running a Victorian home, covering everything from recipes and budgeting to childcare and etiquette.

Despite her lasting legacy, Isabella sadly passed away before she was 30 years old. Yet her work continued to shape households for generations and remains one of the most influential domestic guides ever written.

✨ A true pioneer of practical living and timeless advice.

Reminder! This Sunday, 24 May 2026, is Kings Birthday Bakeoff day! This year it is being held in the Arts Society building - between the Settler Cottage and the Madill shed here at Firth Tower Reserve and Museum. Once again, we'll have Mrs. Shirley Frew QSM as judge, with prizes of chocolate bars, honey, and Firth Tower tea towel for winners!

This year we have an extra category for bakers.

Division 3 – Children – cake and baked goods
Division 4 – Allergy – Gluten/Dairy free – cake and baked goods

Bake an entry or simply come along for the shared afternoon tea where we'll serve up all of the entries plus a cuppa (for a gold coin donation). Want to take a look around the museum while you're here? $5 admission all day! It's going to be a fun afternoon!
