Now showing at the Carlton Gallery, a beautiful new exhibition celebrating colour, craft, and the stories that shape us. 18th May to 14th June.

Weโ€™re proud to present new work by Graham Young and Leigh Barbosa, alongside a supporting display from Black Shed Pottery.

Graham Young brings his signature realism and vibrant colour, capturing the familiar corners of Aotearoa , from coastal scenes to the nostalgic Kiwi icons that spark memories for so many of us. His work has been exhibited widely across New Zealand and features in collections here and overseas.

Leigh Barbosa shares a deeply personal body of work created during her time in northern Portugal, where she first learned lino printing. Originally trained in fashion design, Leighโ€™s creative practice now spans printmaking and ceramics. This is her first exhibition, and we are thrilled to showcase her beautiful, thoughtful pieces.

Black Shed Pottery completes the exhibition with handcrafted ceramics that bring warmth, texture, and a grounded sense of place.

Come in, take your time, and enjoy this stunning mix of colour, craft, and storytelling.

Open daily at The Arts Junction, 36 Main Road, Katikati

In conversation with contemporary Mฤori artist Hemi Stewart โœ’๏ธ

During the curation process of our current exhibition ๐—ฃ๐—ข๐—ก๐—ข ๐—”๐—ง๐—จ,
weโ€™ve been noticing the bold colours and abstract notes emerging in Hemiโ€™s most recent work, and were curious to understand whatโ€™s driving this vibrant shift.

His paintings feel alive, layered with reflection, movement, and a growing confidence in a personal visual language that continues to evolve.

Building on previous exhibitions, Hemi is developing a distinctive style shaped in part by the influence of mentor, New Zealand artist and writer Darcy Nicholas, alongside his own lived experience and cultural grounding.

The works are striking for their use of bold, bright tones and contrasting colour; a palette that actively seeks to uplift and energise both the viewer and the surrounding environment.
Nature plays a central role in this expression: deep blues echo ngฤ Awa, ngฤ Roto, and te Moana; rich browns ground the work in earth and local fauna; vibrant greens speak to flora and mountainous landscapes.

This new body of work embraces a more holistic approach, where form, colour, and meaning converge in an abstract context.

Hemi is also exploring new territory drawing on the spiritual dimensions of Te ฤ€o Mฤori and his upbringing on the marae.

Technically, his process continues to expand, incorporating stencil and screen-printing methods, where colour is not always applied directly to the canvas, resulting in layered, textured compositions that invite closer engagement.

by Julie-Grace Clifton

Walking last week along the footpath, opposite the Talisman Hotel, I stopped for a decent look at the mural above the hotelโ€™s entrance. Over on the hotel side of the road, you might not particularly notice the artwork if you were watching where you were going, or looking out for a carpark.

This mural, called ๐‘ฎ๐’๐’Š๐’๐’ˆ ๐‘ต๐’๐’˜๐’‰๐’†๐’“๐’†, is of a horse and gig, and one slumped passenger. The artist is ๐๐ž๐ญ๐ž๐ซ ๐„๐ง๐ญ๐ž๐ซ, originally from Holland.

It was nearly Easter, and State Highway 2 choker with a stream of cars, utes, trucks; although perhaps fewer than you might expect, given the national fuel situation.

Perhaps the horse and gig, used widely in the 19th century, are the future? Indeed, this method of transport was driverless well before todayโ€™s vehicle models.
A drinker who consumed too much liquor at the Talisman and passed out, could be unceremoniously plonked into his gig, the horse unhitched, and, once started off in the right direction, the horse would get the passenger safely home.

Unless, that is, a particular practical joke was pulled on the comatose passenger. Local tricksters sometimes rode ahead to the manโ€™s farm gate, took the horse out of its shafts, then led the animal inside. Theyโ€™d shut the gate, pass the shafts through, reattach them to the horseโ€™s harness. The horse is now on one side of the gate, the gig on the other. Neither can move forwards or backwards.

The mural shows this โ€˜๐‘–๐‘š๐‘๐‘œ๐‘ ๐‘ ๐‘–๐‘๐‘™๐‘’โ€™ situation.
I like to think the horse was well rewarded for its service.

Mลrena Katikati,

BARRY UPDATE!!!

Coming to you live all the way from my office... Barry's surgery went very well, although I do think he has lost quite a bit of weight. Is it just me?

To our left we have the wonderful Mr Donald Paterson (lead surgeon) and to the right the infamous Steve Graveson (assistant surgeon).

Not long now Katikati, until Barry is back in town reading his paper. Keep watching this space!!

Have a magical day...

Step a little closer into the world behind the work of Rhiannon Myers, a practice shaped by curiosity and a deep connection to fibre and land.

Rhiannon Myersโ€™ craft is rooted in a journey that began unexpectedly - "๐‘š๐‘ฆ ๐‘™๐‘–๐‘“๐‘’ ๐‘–๐‘› ๐‘“๐‘–๐‘๐‘Ÿ๐‘’ ๐‘๐‘’๐‘”๐‘Ž๐‘› ๐‘๐‘ฆ ๐‘ค๐‘Ž๐‘ฆ ๐‘œ๐‘“ ๐‘Ž ๐‘ก๐‘Ÿ๐‘Ž๐‘–๐‘›." What started as a way to pass time during daily commutes in Toronto quickly evolved into a deep and enduring engagement with fibre. From knitting, her creative process expanded into weaving, natural dyes, and spinning, later supported by formal studies in fibre arts.

Describing herself as having a ๐‘๐‘ข๐‘ก๐‘ก๐‘’๐‘Ÿ๐‘“๐‘™๐‘ฆ ๐‘ ๐‘œ๐‘ข๐‘™, Myers has lived and worked across places, gathering skills, materials, and knowledge that now inform a richly layered approach.

After travelling and training internationally, she settled here in the Bay of Plenty, where her work is shaped by a close connection to the land.
Raising her own fibre sheep and cultivating a small dye garden, Rhiannon works with materials she has grown, gathered, and processed herself.
