Today we sadly acknowledge the passing of John Husband, our Gallery Director from 1977–2011.

John was a passionate supporter and tireless advocate for the gallery and its collection. A gifted artist in his own right, he spent decades capturing the iconic and historic places of Southland. The gallery is honoured to hold many of John’s works in the public collection, including portraits of prominent Southlanders.

For many years, John’s distinctive pen and brush illustrations of our region appeared weekly in the Southland Times, becoming a cherished visual record of Southland’s heritage. He also published several books featuring his artwork alongside his extensive historical research.

John leaves behind a remarkable body of work - a legacy of immense cultural value that will continue to be celebrated for generations to come. His contribution to the arts in Murihiku is profound, and his impact as one of Southland’s most significant artists is lasting.

We extend our deepest condolences to his whānau during this time.

Art is for everyone - but not everyone can get to the gallery.

We’re looking for someone to flip the script on traditional gallery work. As our 'Outreach Curator', you’ll take art experiences into the community - into schools, rural halls, libraries, and wherever people gather. This is a 12-month fixed-term role (0.8 FTE), and it’s all about meeting people where they are.

You’ll be part curator, part community weaver, part producer. You'll work closely with our team at Invercargill Public Art Gallery / He Waka Tuia, but your real office will be the roads, paddocks, and neighbourhoods of our region.

If this sounds like you - check out the link below and apply today!
