Major Server Upgrade Secures Hawke’s Bay History for Future Generations
The team at Knowledge Bank is pleased to announce the successful completion of a major $80,000 server upgrade project, ensuring the long-term preservation and protection of Hawke’s Bay’s digital heritage for future generations.
The project has significantly strengthened the organisation’s digital infrastructure and resilience, enabling the continued growth and safeguarding of the region’s historical collections, photographs, documents, newspapers, and community archives.
The new system includes two physical servers located in Hastings - one housed at Stoneycroft and another securely hosted by Tribe Technologies - along with a third backup server operating in the cloud. This three-tiered approach provides increased security, redundancy, and protection for the thousands of digital records held by Knowledge Bank.
Knowledge Bank Chairperson Cynthia Bowers said the project represents an important investment in preserving the stories and memories of Hawke’s Bay.
“Every photograph, newspaper, document, and story in our collections helps tell the story of our region and its people. This upgrade ensures these valuable records will remain safe, accessible, and preserved for future generations.”
Knowledge Bank currently has more than 50,000 items available online, with a further 100,000 items in storage waiting to be processed and added to the website. The upgraded infrastructure ensures the organisation has the capacity to continue expanding access to these important historical resources well into the future.
Knowledge Bank would like to sincerely thank New Zealand Lotteries Commission, the Bernard Chambers Charitable Trust and Pub Charity for their generous financial support, which made the project possible.
Special thanks are also extended to Tribe Technologies for their expertise, guidance, and ongoing support throughout the installation and migration process.
The organisation also acknowledges the dedication of its Board members, volunteers, staff, and supporters whose commitment continues to strengthen the work of preserving Hawke’s Bay history.
“With hundreds of thousands of people engaging with our collections each month, investing in secure and reliable infrastructure is essential,” said Bowers.
Knowledge Bank remains committed to building a lasting digital archive that protects the stories, memories, and identity of Hawke’s Bay for generations to come.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and organised volunteer to help plan and coordinate a Vintage Market Day in Hawke’s Bay. This role is perfect for someone who enjoys community events, vintage culture, music, and working with people. The Volunteer Event Planner will assist with organising stallholders, coordinating live music and entertainment, supporting event promotion, and helping manage the general logistics required to deliver a successful and welcoming community event. Previous event experience is helpful but not essential, as enthusiasm, reliability, and good communication skills are the most important qualities.
This is a fantastic opportunity to gain hands-on event management experience while making valuable community connections. You will work alongside a supportive team and play an important role in creating a vibrant event that brings people together and supports local vendors, performers, and community groups. Flexible hours are available leading up to the event, with involvement required on the day of the market. Anyone interested in contributing to a positive community experience in Hawke’s Bay is encouraged to apply.

In this engaging landmarks talk, Tony Bone recounts the multi-generational story of F. L. Bone, a well-known family hardware business in Hastings that dates back to the 1880s. Originally established as Boyland & Co. in Napier, the business evolved through several ownerships before Tony’s grandfather, Frank Leonard Bone, took it over and eventually rebranded it as F. L. Bone in 1900.

Found in Garner V collection

The Western Spit Westshore School 75th Jubilee 1897–1972 booklet is a fantastic glimpse into the history of one of Napier’s coastal schools and its close knit community. It traces the school’s journey from its beginnings in 1897 through to its 75th jubilee, featuring class photos, memories from past pupils and teachers, and stories that reflect how the school grew alongside Westshore itself. These pages capture not just education, but community life across generations in Hawke’s Bay.
Do you recognise any names or faces, or have your own memories of Westshore School? We would love to hear from you so we can continue adding to the region’s history.
