Panel Kōrero: Community, Kaitiakitanga & the Future of Our Wai
📅 Saturday 27 June, 1pm
✨ Free, no booking required

Nau mai, haere mai for a relaxed discussion, where we’ll look at our relationships with water, and the role of communities & iwi in protecting Aotearoa's waterways. This explores themes in the exhibition ‘Currents Calling Home: Ai Iwane & Mānawatia te Wai’, curated by Kurumi Kido and Sophie Davis.

We’ll be bringing together leading voices in environmental practice, iwi advocacy and community action:

- Katarina Kawana of the Mānawatia te Wai research collective
- Ngaio Tiuka of Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Inc
- Te Kerehi Thompson of the Hastings District Council’s Waiaroha Water Centre

Facilitated by Charles Ropitini, Pou Ahurea at Hastings District Council - Te Kaunihera ā-Rohe o Heretaunga

‘Clearing’: Ella Sutherland
13 June – 12 September 2026

✨ Opening Celebration
Friday 12 June, 5.30pm

In ‘Clearing’, Ella Sutherland approaches the gallery’s foyer like an arena — a space of approach, threshold, and impression. The starting point for this exhibition was a collection of found silkscreens, originally used for screen-printing showjumping ribbons, built up over years to form an accidental archive of competition.

‘Clearing’ encompasses printed materials, painted surfaces, and sculptures that use and mimic the fixtures of equestrian showjumping, held in place by upright supports called “standards” — used to shape the course, testing horse and rider through a unique visual and spatial language.

Karanga atu rā ki a koutou e ngā Atua-Kuia e, karanga atu rā, karanga atu rā.

‘Ahakoa He Iti’ is a kōrero — a conversation between a group of contemporary adornment artists, some well-established and others starting their journey. Their exchange reflects on the powerful narratives that can sit within a minute detail, or a physically small artwork.

Meet Me at the Gallery – Art Making Session
🗓️ Tuesday 2 June, 1.30pm

This monthly programme is a chance to slow down and explore art together - and this time, we're taking that one step further with an easy printmaking session! We thought we’d switch things up a bit from the usual guided talk. Think foam, ink, templates, and plenty of fun. No drawing skills required - just come along and give it a go.

Bring a friend and come as you are, just maybe not in your best shirt! 😄

Meet Me at the Gallery is on the first Tuesday of every month and is best suited for adults 60+.

Over the last few months, we’ve loved seeing so many of you connect with the stories in Madison Kelly’s cymbals and explore wayfinding through Ruebena Paraha’s mahi toi.

Both ‘Hau Weherua / Trade Winds’ and ‘Wayfinding’ close this Saturday, don’t miss your final chance to visit and explore.

Find some downtime to take in the immersive film experiences when you visit the exhibition ‘Currents Calling Home’. 🎥

On one side of the Gallery, wall-length drone footage from Ai Iwane shows a dramatic annual event along the Mattole River in California: each autumn, a sandbar blocking the river breaks open, reuniting it with the sea and allowing native salmon to swim upstream.

On the other, inside a thatched whare raupō by the collective Mānawatia te Wai, watch a Super 8 and 16mm film documenting its construction. Structures like this were traditionally used for eeling.

Great to see so many people getting hands-on, learning about the cultural and practical uses of harakeke (flax) at a workshop here with Arapeta Hākura!

Participants learned about traditional fibre preparation techniques, finding out how harakeke can be twisted into strong cord for lashing and binding.

This method was used for constructing the whare raupō in ‘Currents Calling Home’, a process which Arapeta guided.
