Today, on Vietnam Veteranโ€™s Day, we pay respect to the voices of those who served, whose testimonies remain vital in their continued fight for recognition.
When Moran Brownie recognised his son Chrisโ€™s enthusiasm for aviation, he gifted him a five-dollar entry ticket to the South Canterbury Aero Club. Over the following years Chris attended various Air Training Cadet (ATC) courses and competitions at Timaru, Wigram and Woodbourne.
At seventeen, in 1970, Chris enlisted in the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF). He qualified at Woodbourne as a Junior Supplier before completing six months posting at Whenuapai. At the time, Commonwealth military operations in Southeast Asia included New Zealandโ€™s diminished yet ongoing presence in Vietnam. Accordingly, Chris was posted to RAF Tengah in Singapore as part of the ANZUK Air Movements unit.
Chris recalls the sudden transition from basic air movements operations to serving as a Loadmaster on RNZAF 41 Squadron Bristol Freighters. The complexity of the Loadmaster role meant he had to absorb new skills quickly, in real time, and under pressure. The sergeantโ€™s shirt he was given on flights to Vietnam โ€˜symbolisedโ€™ his new role:
โ€œWe were required to pre-plan all aircraft cargo loads, plus all loading and unloading operations, configure the aircraft, ensuring all cargo was properly restrained, compute the aircraft weight and balance and perform appropriate pre-flight/in-flight/ post-flight inspections, and to brief and supervise passengers.โ€
Chris completed multiple missions including Vietnam, Malaysia, Hong Kong, the Philippines and Thailand. He recalls the intensity of those missions:
โ€œRapid turnarounds, overloaded aircraft, wingtip spiral descents, and the crack of small-arms fire!โ€
Nearly five decades later Chris is patiently waiting for his โ€˜Field Promotion and Aircrew Allowances.โ€™ Chris is not alone; his experience echoes the many unacknowledged Air Force personnel who came home from service in Vietnam. Douglas โ€˜Scottyโ€™ Wingfieldโ€™s decade-long effort to secure recognition for over 137 RNZAF airmen who flew into Vietnam continues to this day. Drawing on unit histories, flight logs, and personal accounts, Wingfield rebuilt the squadronโ€™s operational record and created โ€˜Scottyโ€™s Listโ€™, now the most complete evidence of 41 Squadronโ€™s flights into South Vietnam from 1965 to 1975.

We are honored to announce a new exhibit featuring the collection of the late ๐€๐๐ซ๐ข๐š๐ง ๐Œ๐š๐ฒ๐›๐ž๐ซ๐ซ๐ฒ, kindly loaned to the Geraldine Military Museum by ๐‰๐š๐ง๐ž ๐…๐š๐ซ๐ข๐ฌ๐ก.

The collection consists of personal and military items belonging to the late ๐‚๐š๐ฉ๐ญ๐š๐ข๐ง ๐‚๐ก๐š๐ซ๐ฅ๐ž๐ฌ ๐‡๐š๐ณ๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ญ ๐”๐ฉ๐ก๐š๐ฆ, ๐•๐‚ & ๐๐š๐ซ, one of New Zealandโ€™s most distinguished military figures.

Captain Upham served during the Second World War and was awarded the ๐•๐ข๐œ๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ข๐š ๐‚๐ซ๐จ๐ฌ๐ฌ ๐š๐ง๐ ๐๐š๐ซ for his extraordinary courage and leadership. He was later recognized again for his remarkable actions at ๐„๐ฅ ๐€๐ฅ๐š๐ฆ๐ž๐ข๐ง.

The items on display offer an intriguing and deeply personal insight into Captain Uphamโ€™s life, reflecting not only his exceptional courage but also the humanity behind this well known figure in New Zealand military history.

During World War II, New Zealand soldiers serving in the Middle East experienced far more than military duties. One remarkable account comes from Driver Randolph McMillan of the New Zealand Army Service Corps, who described an unforgettable expedition into the mountains of Lebanon.

Alongside a small party of fellow servicemen, McMillan set out before dawn to climb one of the highest peaks in the Lebanon Range. After a six-mile trek through snow-covered slopes, they reached the summit and were rewarded with spectacular views across the ancient Bekaa Valley, one of the oldest continuously inhabited regions in the world and a landscape steeped in Biblical and Crusader history.

From their lofty vantage point, the soldiers could see the famous Cedars of Lebanon. Revered for thousands of years, these majestic trees are mentioned throughout the Bible and were traditionally said to have supplied timber for the palace of King David and the Temple of Solomon.

The adventure took an unexpected turn. On their descent, armed only with canvasses, the men slid down the snowy mountainside, describing the exhilarating ride as one of the greatest thrills they had experienced during their service.

Before returning to camp, they stopped for a swim in the cool, spring fed waters of Lake Yammouneh, a place linked by local legend to the story of Adonis from Greek mythology.

McMillan later reflected that it was "๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฐ๐˜ด๐˜ต ๐˜ฑ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ด๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ต ๐˜ฅ๐˜ข๐˜บ๐˜ด ๐˜ ๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ท๐˜ฆ ๐˜ด๐˜ฑ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ๐˜ต ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ˆ๐˜ณ๐˜ฎ๐˜บ" a reminder that even in times of war, moments of wonder, friendship, and adventure could still be found.

๐Ÿ“ธ This fascinating account offers a glimpse into the extraordinary experiences of New Zealand servicemen serving far from home during World War II.
