On Saturday 23rd May 2026, the Southern Gunners marked the occasion at Kennedy Park in Geraldine with the Geraldine Military Museumโ€™s 25 Pounder Field Gun carrying out a six-round blank fire salute.

It was a fantastic commemoration and a great opportunity for the community to see and hear this historic artillery piece in action.

This Saturday, Geraldine will host a special Gunners Day commemoration in Kennedy Park. ๐Ÿ“

Each year on 26 May, serving and former members of Commonwealth Artillery units gather to mark Gunners Day. As this weekend is the closest weekend to the official date, former Gunners and supporters of the Royal New Zealand Artillery will be gathering in Geraldine for a social weekend and blank-firing salute.

The salute will take place at 12:00 noon on Saturday in Kennedy Park ๐Ÿ•›๐Ÿ’ฅ

The Southern Gunners, who are part of the Royal New Zealand Artillery Association, will be crewing and firing the gun for the salute. The Geraldine Military Museum is proud to support the commemoration by supplying the 25-pounder Field Gun.

Members of the public are warmly welcome to come along and watch. The gun crew will also be available after the salute to answer any questions. ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ๐Ÿ™Œ

๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฟ A Special Reunion at the Museum

Today we had the pleasure of welcoming Ray Brokenshire, visiting from McKenzie House here in Geraldine.

Ray served alongside Don in the 1970s as part of 9 Platoon, C Company, 2 Cant NMWC, and it was something truly special to see these two catch up again after more than 40 years.

It was fantastic to see the memories, and camaraderie still as strong as ever after all these years.

Thank you for visiting Ray, we hope to see you again soon!

๐Ÿ“ธ A Special Family Visit, Geraldine Military Museum

We had the pleasure of welcoming the Fitchett family to the Museum yesterday.

What made this visit meaningful is that David Fitchett has a direct family connection to the late Lieutenant Ian Lester Thomas, whose story is featured here in the museum.

The family spent the afternoon exploring the museum.

Itโ€™s always incredibly special to see families connect with the stories we preserve.

Thank you for visiting, it was a privilege to have you with us. ๐Ÿ˜Š
