Kia ora e hoa
I've been processing the news of Jools' passing for a few hours now and reading the many tributes across all forms of media and from people from all walks of life. Here is one of those tributes...

"Today, we didn’t lose a great New Zealander, we lost a part of New Zealand itself with the passing of Jools Topp.

It’s hard to think of anybody who embodied the NZ spirit more than she did.

Jools Topp, along with her sister Lynda, rose to prominence in the 1980s, becoming two of the first openly le***an entertainers many New Zealanders had ever seen on mainstream television.

And people need to understand how unbelievably courageous that was.

This was before rainbow branding. Before corporations pretended they had always been allies to the LGBTQ community.

A time when the country was still deeply divided over homosexual law reform.

Meaning that at a time when being openly q***r could genuinely cost you your career, your safety, and your place in public life,

Jools Topp was still unapologetically herself in front of the entire country.

She used her skills in comedy and music to support causes like Māori land rights, the anti-apartheid movement and social justice movements throughout New Zealand.

She was a passionate anti-nuclear activist during a time when standing against nuclear power and nuclear ships became one of the defining political movements in New Zealand history.

Jools Topp was somebody uniquely New Zealand.

She was funny.
She was talented.
She was politically engaged.
She was kind.

Rest in power, Jools."

Wasn't going to miss it, so jumped on a bus to Palmerston North and headed to Wellington to the Split Enz concert with friends last week. Front row seats. So close I could see Neil's eyes twinkle when he smiled at me 😄
Epic.
Beyond Epic.
So grateful.

So...6 weeks ago I fell on a wet floor at our local supermarket...dislocating (and fracturing) my right elbow, damaging tendons/ligaments around the elbow, damaging an artery and my hand and wrist. Not my best day 😂
Lots of specialist appointments and scans and issues with ACC...but on the mend!
Yesterday I could tie my own shoelaces and cut a sausage using my right hand! Progress! Looking forward to being able to drive again and being able to raise a glass/cup with my right arm.
Jude has been a superstar 🌟 and is amazing! So grateful 💖

Kia ora on this crispy, glorious ANZAC day. I am honored to have the WW2 medals of my grandfather, Keith Wilfred George Waters (2NZEF #20992, POW Greece; Stalag XVIII-A, Wolfsberg, Austria).
And also the medals (miniature) of my father, Donald Bernard Waters, (RNZAF #74610, Vietnam)
We gather, as we always gather, not to glorify war, but to remind ourselves that we value who we are and the freedoms we possess, and to acknowledge the courage and sacrifice of those who contributed much and those who continue to serve.
Ngā mihi nui.
Lest we forget.
Kei wareware tātou.
