Chicks Hotel… where to begin? Having grown up just ten minutes down the road this spot holds a lifetime of memories. It’s where I shared my first jug with my brother at the tender age of 15, watched countless incredible gigs, played endless games of pool and enjoyed more than a few beers.

Chris has captured this building so beautifully. Haunting, atmospheric, nostalgic… known to very resident in Kōpūtai and beyond. A snapshot in time of a very special piece of Ōtepoti architecture and history.

The iconic Crown Mill building located by the Oval in Ōtepoti/Dunedin. Built in 1867 it is one of Aotearoa’s oldest industrial buildings and certainly one of the cities most recognised.

A review of our current group exhibition “Landmark” by James Dignan for “Art Seen” in the today

A triumvirate of artists is also presenting work at Hutch.

While not having the track record of the three worthies at Milford, the three Dunedin School of Art alumni impress with their disparate works, all reflecting the artists’ connections with Dunedin, its environment, buildings and light.

Kipp Goodall’s chimeric images focus on the geometries of Dunedin’s buildings. Using photographic images, the artist presents softly toned screen-printed constructs, weaving shattered lattices of building from the horizontals and verticals of Dunedin’s modern architecture.

Bryn Corkery uses the opposite end of Dunedin’s urban structures, focusing his eye on the friendlier, more character-filled, but often more dilapidated structures that are in many cases being slowly lost to the Dunedin skyline. There is knowing nostalgia in Corkery’s warm ceramic homages to the Carisbrook’s terraces’ gate and local cafes, memento mori for a passing cityscape.

Chris Schmelz’s photographic images look to the bleak, empty seascapes of the city and harbour. Using old, found film stock and the unusual sepia effects created from using a coffee-based developer, the works have a strong antique feel reminiscent of pioneering photographic processes. Schmelz provides perhaps the star of the show with a strong image of the former Chick’s Hotel, At Action Park.

Featured work: Bryn Corkery’s ‘Sammy’s Pool and Pokies’, Ceramic, glaze, 190H x 200W, 2026

(differs from one featured in ODT hard copy which is ‘Esplanade Corner’)

Kipp Goodall’s ‘Lattice’ catches the light beautifully at the front of the gallery and it’s such a pleasure to see that silver shimmer!

It has been so fascinating watching locals “click” when they realise that this work is a latticed image of two well known local buildings, ‘Burns house’ and our controversial hospital. Whether admired or criticised, these brutalist structures are undeniably part of Ōtepoti’s identity, and have long been buildings I have found compelling.

Kipp’s body of work pays tribute to Aotearoa artist Ian Scott through the use of geometric repetition and layered lattice forms. Inspired by the architectural parallels between the two cities Kipp has called home (Dunedin and Wellington) the works create a visual conversation where elements of each city blend together into hybrid architectural forms.

I will be back in the gallery tomorrow at 10am so make sure to pop in and see this work in person.

Featured work: ‘Lattice’ - Screen print on Hahnemühle paper, 985mm x 900mm, 2026.

Artist Chris Schmelz develops his film using an environmentally friendly ‘Caffenol’ process. A unique coffee based formula that produces striking black and white/sepia toned photographs.

These images have an almost painterly quality to them and as an Ōtepoti local who has spent a lot of time in Aramoana and lives by the sea, I could spend hours immersed in these serene and atmospheric works.

Featured work (left to right) - ‘Spit Blues 1’, ‘Spit Blues 2’, 440mm x 560mm and Be Calmed (The sea has stopped), 560mm x 440mm, 2026
