🚨📢 TALL TAILS HAS LANDED! Our new Tall Tails exhibition opens at 9.30am today, so please come along to our place to be wowed by the scale of our latest exhibits, and the cheerleaders for our Home for Heroes fundraising campaign.

The tails belonging to two national heroes – our Lockheed C-130 Hercules and P-3K2 Orion aircraft - were officially launched as a new exhibition last night.

The aircraft are too large to fit in our storage hangars with their tails on. So we turned their tails into an exhibition until we can raise the money needed to build them a new home large enough to fit the Hercules and Orion - tails and all.

As you can see from the pictures, the Hercules and Orion tails are so huge they barely fit in our largest display area – so we’re going to need a bigger museum space!

Getting these tails on display has been a huge effort involving a whole lot of our museum team and supporters.

We'd like to say a huge thank you to kaumatua Ruawhitu Pokaia for the karakia to get last night off to a perfect start.

Thanks to our board Chair Kevin Short, board members, No. 5 and No. 40 Squadron aviators past and present, local MPs, councillors, friends and supporters who came along to the launch last night.

The Lockheed tails needed some specialist help to prepare them the display, and we’d like to thank Dave and Matt Harward of Harward and Son for the precision manufacturing work, mechanical engineering consultant Motovated for the design work and sign off, and Titan Cranes for the delicate lift into place.

Finally, thanks to our patient visitors for putting up with a disrupted week as we put Tall Tails together.

Tall Tails is free for New Zealanders and is on every day at the Air Force Museum of New Zealand from 9.30am until 4.30pm.

WHY ALL THE FINNY BUSINESS? Access to our Thérèse Angelo Wing will be restricted today until to allow for the installation of a new exhibition which opens on Friday 5 June.

All will be revealed on Friday!

What we can say is that we’re creating a new exhibition dedicated to our Hercules and Orion aircraft, which remain in storage until we raise the funds needed to build them a new exhibition space.

We promise all the ‘finny’ business will be ‘finteresting’ – but we can’t say why.

The new exhibition opens at 9.30am on Friday and is FREE!

THE FIRST 8! We're very excited to let you know that we're hosting the New Zealand Primiere of the First 8.

Come and listen to composer Alexandra Hope Watson talk about her work The First 8 and then see the recording of its premiere at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.

This inspiring musical tells the untold story of the first eight women employed by the Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) during World War II, led by Pauline Gower.

The First 8 explores the pioneering journey of these female pilots who overcame a doubting public and made history as they ferried Spitfires, Hurricanes and other aircraft across the United Kingdom.

They campaigned for equal treatment, ultimately winning the ATA’s landmark recognition as the first organisation in the UK to grant equal pay to women.

11am, 1:30pm and 3pm daily Take a behind the scenes tour with an experienced guide, no booking is required – just ask at the Welcome Desk. The cost is $5 per person (under 12s are free).

🚨WINNER CHICKEN DINNER 📢: Come on down Alex Kaandorp - winner of this week's mystery object competition.

Alex managed to correctly identify the mystery object as the air intake off our North American P-51D Mustang.

We love our Mustang - arguably the most successful Allied fighter aircraft of World War Two.*

Towards the end of World War Two the Royal New Zealand Air Force had set its sights on a fleet of 370 Mustangs to replace our Corsairs. However, the war ended before this became a reality and in 1945 30 Mustangs arrived and went directly in to storage.

In 1951 they were put into service for the four squadrons of the Territorial Air Force, but we taken out of service in 1955, with most sold for scrap in 1958.

Our Mustang was acquired in 1985 and is not a genuine RNZAF example. It was built for the United States Army Air Force and served in the Indonesian Air Force.

It is displayed as NZ2410 which served with No. 4 Territorial Air Force Squadron at Taieri.

As well going to the top of the class Alex wins an Air Force Museum of New Zealand roundel coffee mug.

Please email [email protected] with your postal address Alex and we will fire up the Bristol Freighter and air freight the coffee mug out to you.

It is round with roundels and just the thing for drinking tea, coffee or Milo from.

More difficult competition coming next week. We promise**.

*Because its exceptional long-range performance turned the tide in the daylight bomber offensive. This may be a controversial view however!

**Our promise is not guaranteed in any way.
