City Art Depot City Art Depot was established in Christchurch in 1989 as a picture framing workshop guided by the principles of professional art care.

City Art Depot is a conservation picture framing workshop & gallery located at 96 Disraeli Street, Christchurch, offering a range of museum-standard framing and art care services. Since then we have provided practical and elegant solutions for the framing, installation, transportation and storage of works of art and artefacts to ensure they are displayed and protected to the best advantage. City Art Depot makes beautiful bespoke picture frames custom-made to suit any artwork. Our hand finished frames are made in a range of different styles and materials, from stained timber to gilded, gesso and lacquer surfaces. We also represent local emerging and established New Zealand artists in our contemporary art gallery featuring paintings, prints, photographs and sculptures for sale.

This Japanese woodblock print based on Utagawa Hiroshige's 1830s painting of cats is framed here for our client in a City Art Depot solid ash timber frame. This piece printed on delicate paper is carefully floated on a soft white museum board backing behind UV blocking glazing.

'Swamp Songs' by Nicholas Burry & Eleanor Diaz Ritson opens in our Up Stairs gallery this coming Tuesday the 8th of September 5.30–7pm.

Swamp Songs is a painted investigation into the Ihutai wetlands and estuary, located on the eastern fringes of Ōtautahi. Emotive responses to the landscape are formed in conversation between the two artists, relating their artworks to each other and to the the histories, qualities and power of place.

'Swamp Songs' will be on show until the 5th of October.

City Art Depot warmly invites everyone to attend the opening of 'now that I'm listening, it's deafening' by Saskia Bunce-Rath, 5.30–7pm Tuesday 8th September 2026 in our gallery at 96 Disraeli Street, Christchurch.

Ōtautahi Christchurch-based artist Saskia Bunce-Rath's significant new body of artwork explores her visions and experiences of nature. A sacred, spiritual entity glimpsed, discovered, through the modern landscape. Her scenes are rendered in embroidery thread containing a vivid surreality and gravity, alive with colour and movement.

Some excerpts from Eugenia Viña's curatorial text 'FIREMAKERS: Luminous Bodies', which accompanies Estefanía Mondaca's current exhibition Firemakers on show in our Up Stairs gallery now. Full copies of this essay are available in the gallery.

Estefanía Mondaca (b. Chile) is a visual artist and architectural designer based in Ōtautahi Christchurch. A graduate of the School of Fine Arts at the University of Chile, her practice spans oil painting, charcoal drawing and collage.

Eugenia Viña is a philosophy graduate from the University of Buenos Aires, visual artist, writer, art therapist, astrologer and tarot reader.
