Save the McDougall Campaign
The Robert McDougall Art Gallery in the Christchurch Botanic Gardens
Hello everyone,
Our petition currently stands at 1314 and has slowed down at the moment. It seems to come and go but is slowly increasing over time and some of the recent comments made by signatories have been wonderful.
The Christchurch City Council met on Tuesday but no report has appeared in the Press concerning the dire situation now facing the Cathedral and Museum projects as a result of the Government providing no further funding in the budget and the recent increased funding provided by the Council being conditional on the Government providing the same amount which it did not. The Council now seems to be the only source of public funding for these projects.
Instead, the news from the Council meeting was to do with the Government’s plans for the amalgamation of Councils. If the coalition Government is returned at the election, it is now likely the Christchurch, Selwyn and Waimakariri Councils will be merged into a super city. How this will affect the running of the Museum is a little unclear as it is on reserve land but I am sure at least eventually the new CCC will wish to amalgamate its ownership under its control. This would enable it to bring all the city’s cultural assets (museum, art galleries and possibly libraries) under one ownership which could bring about cost savings in running all the different buildings. If this happened the day to day running of the Museum would come under the direct control of the new CCC which would presumably end the present 50 year lease arrangement. So, a lot could yet happen before it reopens in 3 to 4 year’s time.
Like van de Velden, John Gibb (1831–1909) was another prominent New Zealand artist widely regarded as one of the country's most significant Scottish born 19th-century maritime and landscape painters. Emigrating to Christchurch in 1876, his meticulous work captured the dramatic coastlines and growing port cities of early colonial New Zealand. The city’s historical collection has 15 of his magnificent works! Here is one more:

The McDougall Art Gallery has been leased to Canterbury Museum for fifty years for their use but they do not have an art collection of a public art gallery standard to display in it so they intend to use it for some of the art they have and also for some of their huge decorative arts and crafts collections.
If you wish to see the paintings from the city’s historical collection again on display in the McDougall Art Gallery when it reopens it is imperative you sign my petition. The link is:
