Join us TONIGHT!! for PAOPAOPAKI👏🏼✨️
the official wrap-up pāti for Ihirangaranga: creation & connection, as we close out Te Marama Puoro o Aotearoa Māori Music Month with an unforgettable night of music and movement.

PAOPAOPAKI is a celebration of the vibrant, innovative, and ever-evolving Māori DJ scene that keeps our dancefloors, gigs, and whare-pāti alive. Featuring sets from INFORDIN, LILA, and tom plum, expect a night of bass, beats, and pure energy as we come together to celebrate the power of sound and connection.

Whether you're here to shake, bounce, wiri, p**i, or simply soak up the atmosphere, this is an invitation to move however your tinana wants to move. Bring your mates, celebrate the month that's been, and finish Ihirangaranga the best way we know how—through music, movement, and community.

A bar will be open throughout the night, with alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks and snacks available to purchase.

INFORDIN, founder of FOODCOURT and host of The Big Fresh Collective , has been a significant presence in the Ōtautahi underground. Her influence has extended through her club night Food Court, a platform dedicated to giving space to BIPOC creatives and partygoers whilst co-hosting Q***r Horizons and 🧪 Kind of Green 🧪 . With performances at Keephush, Twisted Frequency, and Haven as well as her releases on BFC and SPDO, she has now cemented herself in the Aotearoa scene.

Her sets, a dynamic reflection of her Tūhoe and Ngāti Raukawa heritage, blend techno, club, amapiano, garage, juke, footmahi and bass. With a focus on high-energy rhythms, INFORDIN's performances are not just music but an immersive storytelling experience.
Her dedication to showcasing diverse sonic landscapes underscores her commitment to inclusivity and cultural expression within the underground music community.

These innovative ringa puoro take us beneath the surface, into sounds that conjure conceptions of Rarohenga and Pulotu — places beyond the seen world, and the source of the waves.

Feel inspiration rise to meet you as three powerful local acts weave together soundwaves from beyond.

Join us for a special screening of Alien Weaponry: Kua Tupu Te Ara, a documentary following the haerenga of one of Aotearoa's most internationally recognised Māori metal bands.

Spanning more than a decade, the film traces Alien Weaponry's story from their beginnings as young brothers Henry and Lewis de Jong, who formed the band as children, through to international tours and performances on some of the world's biggest metal stages. Combining six years of documentary footage with home videos from the band's early years, Kua Tupu Te Ara offers a personal look at life on the road, the relationships behind the band, and the experiences that have shaped them.

This event forms part of Ihirangaranga: creation & connection, a multi-week programme presented by Te Whare Tapere from 13 August – 5 September, celebrating Te Marama Puoro o Aotearoa | Māori Music Month.

He mihi nui ki a koutou katoa who joined us for the opening of Ihirangaranga: from waves, from breath and the beginning of our Ihirangaranga programme. 🖤

It was a beautiful way to open this kaupapa together — to gather, connect, share kōrero and see Te Whare Tapere filled with whānau, ringatoi, friends and manuhiri as we begin these next few weeks celebrating Te Marama Puoro o Aotearoa.

He mihi maioha ki a Corban Te Aika for opening Ihirangaranga on behalf of mana whenua. We are deeply grateful for his time and presence with us.

Ihirangaranga: from waves, from breath brings together mahi toi and taonga across many forms, reflecting the many waves, genres, generations and relationships that make up the Māori music community of Ōtautahi.

He mihi nui ki a koutou, ngā ringatoi, ringa puoro and contributors who have so generously shared your mahi, taonga and kōrero with Ihirangaranga, and put your ihi, wehi and wana into bringing this exhibition together:

Opening Tonight – Monday 8 December, 5.30pm
Te Whare Tapere
Join us this evening as we welcome Tiana Te Rongopatahi Moi’ha, the 2025 Macmillan Brown Centre for Pacific Studies Artist in Residence.
Tiana is a powerhouse cultural practitioner, educator, musician, artist, actor and community leader committed to holding and sharing the depth of Hawai‘i, Moananuiākea and Indigenous knowledge.
Her project, Kukulu Hale Kukulu Kaiaulu, explores the physical and symbolic act of building a hale while nurturing kaiaulu – drawing on the Indigenous Hawaiian practice of kūkulu hale, traditional architecture grounded in community, connection and place.
Come be part of the opening, support the kaupapa, and step into a space shaped by Indigenous artistry and imagination.

After a little pause, we’re excited to welcome you back to Te Whare Tapere! Come visit, bring your art, and pull up a seat at our table, we’ve missed this creative connection.

We’ve had a few changes behind the scenes: we’re saying goodbye to Ngaio, who’s moving on to focus on her own creative practice, thank you for everything, Ngaio! And we’re excited to welcome Honey, our new Volunteer Manager and all-round creative superstar.
