Opening Tonight – Monday 8 December, 5.30pm
Te Whare Tapere
Join us this evening as we welcome Tiana Te Rongopatahi Moi’ha, the 2025 Macmillan Brown Centre for Pacific Studies Artist in Residence.
Tiana is a powerhouse cultural practitioner, educator, musician, artist, actor and community leader committed to holding and sharing the depth of Hawai‘i, Moananuiākea and Indigenous knowledge.
Her project, Kukulu Hale Kukulu Kaiaulu, explores the physical and symbolic act of building a hale while nurturing kaiaulu – drawing on the Indigenous Hawaiian practice of kūkulu hale, traditional architecture grounded in community, connection and place.
Come be part of the opening, support the kaupapa, and step into a space shaped by Indigenous artistry and imagination.

Te Whare Tapere is so excited to host Kūkulu Hale, Kūkulu Kaiaulu, an exhibition from Tiana Te Rongopatahi Mo’iha. Fresh from her Macmillan Brown Residency, Tiana’s work comes to us straight from fibregallery and we’re happy to share the alofa ♥️🖤💜 We’ll keep you posted on our soft opening and in the meantime, check out the install process.

After a little pause, we’re excited to welcome you back to Te Whare Tapere! Come visit, bring your art, and pull up a seat at our table, we’ve missed this creative connection.

We’ve had a few changes behind the scenes: we’re saying goodbye to Ngaio, who’s moving on to focus on her own creative practice, thank you for everything, Ngaio! And we’re excited to welcome Honey, our new Volunteer Manager and all-round creative superstar.

Drop by, say hi, and let’s make the gallery buzz with creativity again!

Last day to catch Pōhutukawa at Te Whare Tapere.

⏰ 11.30 - 4.00pm - Plant giveaway
We’re giving away the plants from the Pōhutukawa exhibition. If you’ve got time and space to care for one, come by, take a piece of the exhibition with you and keep te taiao thriving.

⏰ 5:30 - 6.30pm
📍 D. Lawn, Te Matariki Toi Ora, The Arts Centre, Ōtautahi
Join us as we mark the closing of our exhibition with a night of reflection, waiata, hot chocolate, and firelight. If you added the name of a loved one to our Kete, we will be placing these into the fire and sending them back to the stars of Matariki.

🌿 Tuesday 8 July - Kawakawa Balm
⏰ 2:00pm – 3:30pm
Juanita will be brewing kawakawa balm using leaves harvested from the exhibition. Bring a small container and take some rokoa home with you.

📿 Wednesday 9 July - Bracelet Making with Tiana
⏰ 11:00am-1:00pm
We’re honouring one of our loved ones this Wednesday. Samara loved purple so come and make a harakeke/purple ribbon bracelet with Tiana. Koha entry. Limited spots, first in, first served.

🌺 Saturday 12 July - 🌱 Plant Giveaway
⏰ 10:00am - 4.00pm
During the day, we’ll be giving away the plants from the Pōhutukawa exhibition. If you’ve got time and space to care for one, come by, take a piece of the exhibition with you and keep te taiao thriving.

CLOSED FOR MATARIKI MĀ PUAKA

Kia ora e te hapori pai,

Te Whare Tapere will be closed on Friday 20th June for Matariki, reopen Saturday 21 June 10am - 4pm.

Don’t fret though, Te Matariki Toi Ora, The Arts Centre still has lots of Matariki events and so does the CCC with the opening of Tirama Mai. Check out both of their websites for more information.

We want to thank everyone who braved the freezing to come to the opening of Pōhutukawa at Te Whare Tapere.
