It has been my honor to represent Philip Trusttum and a pleasure to have developed a lasting friendship with him over the years. His personality and kind nature were marked by subtlety and nuance, often underscored by his characteristic smile and great sense of humor. Philip's vast knowledge of art, both local and international, facilitated hours of engaging conversation. His dynamic energy and youthful spirit remained unwavering until the end, inspiring many through his dedication and mentorship. His artistic approach was guided by his conviction regarding the significance of strong pictorial elements and narrative. One notable painting, and one of my personal favorites, drew inspiration from a dishcloth's chevron design, which he humorously referenced during studio visits. His artwork frequently featured everyday items and memories, expressed with his distinct perspective and flair. Philip was a masterful colorist, skillfully expressing or abstracting everything around him. His passion for music reflected a deep understanding of diverse genres, and he would often surprise me by naming punk bands and discussing his latest album acquisitions. New Zealand has lost a genuine luminary. To his family, I offer my sincerest condolences. To friends and admirers of Philip, we join in paying tribute to his memory 1940- 2026.
