Announcing the final exhibition for Ilam Campus Gallery for 2025: Damdadi Da 담다디 다

Opening 5pm, Wednesday 24 September
Artist talk 12:30pm, Thursday 25 September

Damdadi Da invites you to inhabit the worlds of Korean artists—some who stayed in Korea, others who moved to Auckland in the late 1990s and 2000s. More than an exhibition, it’s a chance to experience how art shapes attention, movement, and presence.

For Aotearoa audiences, this is not just about viewing works, but engaging with rhythms, gestures, and practices born from distance, migration, and the negotiation of space. These works trace connections across time and geography, carrying subtle resonances into the present.

Curated by Seung Yul Oh and Steve Carr, Damdadi Da is an exploration of movement, presence, and artistic dialogue—a space where worlds meet, practices endure, and perception itself becomes part of the work.

The fourth and final exhibition of the 2025 Student Series is 'Heaven and the Hard Shoulder'.

Opening 5pm, Wednesday 10 September
Artist talk 12:30pm, Thursday 11 September

'Heaven and the Hard Shoulder' explores the tension between systems of control and their decline. Set against a backdrop of civic erosion, the exhibition brings together works by Fionn Walker, Lucinda Tennent and Marie Lawrence. Fractured symbols and failing structures form a landscape that examines the aesthetics of collapse and the persistence of relentless consumption.

Exhibition ends 17 September.

The third exhibition in the 2025 Student Series opens next week: 'Breathe. Draw. Hold. Release.' by Master of Fine Arts student Claudia Du 新竹

Opening 5pm Wednesday 13 August
Artist talk 12pm Thursday 14 August

Welcome to the psychospatial pressure chamber.
Archery as ritual — Precision. Control. Surrender.
Power as relation —- Intent. Agency. Tension. Trust.

Perception. Objecthood. The porous line between observer and observed.
Tension as structure. Exposure as design.

Stand between action and consequence, gaze and impact. The space between screens is not neutral; it is a field of consent. You do not see both presence and aftermath—not at once. Looking is loss. Choose your position.

The arrow does not touch you. Or does it?
Hyperreal. Staged. Perceived.

Artist, work, viewer, this statement — no one is neutral.

What is not seen is not lost. It is enforced.
Objective and symbolic violence, disguised as form.

Stand in the gaze.
Decide whether to flinch. Or don’t.

Oscillate.

Announcing the second student series exhibition: 'Re-earth' by Bella Macdonald and Rory Mainwaring 🙌

📆 Opening event: 5pm, Wednesday 30 July
🗣 Artist talk: 12pm, Thursday 31 July

Bella and Rory invite you in-gallery to join them for a drink of hot chocolate. The artists hope to facilitate an environment that favours community and encourages informality. Participating in slower modes of connection can be sacred in an age where there is an ingrained expectation of constant productivity. 'Re-earth' offers a chance to take a breath, as a reminder that we can ‘re-earth’ ourselves through physical forms of interaction.

Handmade ceramic tumblers act as facilitators for this event. Made with love, Bella and Rory emphasise how an object can be both a grounding force and a social connector. Within their show these tumblers highlight the historic role that the sharing of food and drink has played across communities. You are invited to become a part of the art, simply through existing in this shared space.

Slowing down and taking time to connect can take active intention and practice, so Bella and Rory will be offering multiple opportunities across the week to reengage with the space and hope you will join them.

Reactivations will take place on:
Wednesday the 30th of July at 5pm (opening night)
Thursday the 31st at 12pm (artist talk begins at 12:30pm)
Monday the 4th of august at 11am
