‘Aimata Finalist: Titali Ahio

Titali Ahio weaves personal history and cultural identity into Famili — a four-piece series exploring ngatu and tapa through contemporary printmaking. What began as his own story of moving from Tonga to Auckland on a rugby scholarship grew into something larger — a celebration of the people who carried him.

In Tongan culture, tapa is a form of wealth and exchange. These pieces are exactly that. Gifts back to family and friends, made with gratitude and heart.

This week we’re looking back at ‘AU TA – ANCESTRAL MARKINGS as an ode to this year’s theme — the importance of collectiveness during one of life’s most significant milestones. Receiving your malofie is deeply personal, but it is never faced alone. ‘AU TA was a celebration of that collective strength, and a reminder that our greatest blessings come through the people around us.

We’re excited to present Tapa Moana Nui, an intergenerational collective dedicated to the celebration and continuation of tapa-making.

The show brings together collaborative and individual works, alongside tools and materials, to honour tapa as a living practice and a way of sharing knowledge, creativity, and community.

Through shared making, and reciprocity, the exhibition highlights the enduring role of tapa in sustaining cultural identity. Makers come from across the Pacific, including Aotearoa, the Cook Islands, Fiji, Hawaiʻi, Niue, Sāmoa, Tonga, Norfolk Island, Ysabel bringing together generations and perspectives to pass on skills, stories, and song through ancestral and contemporary practice.

Opening: Friday, 13th February, 6PM Fibre Gallery
