Te Uru is a regional gallery locally rooted in West Auckland but globally minded. With our unique perspective, located in the forested outskirts of Tāmaki Makaurau, Te Uru is the region's leading contemporary gallery with an international programme that reflects our place in Aotearoa and the wider Moana region, connecting new ideas and different practices with local and global networks. Our vision

is to be the leading home for contemporary culture that is fresh, relevant, empowering, and essential to the wellbeing of our communities. As a destination gallery, Te Uru operates from an award-winning building in the recently redeveloped Lopdell Precinct that attracts local, regional, national and international visitors. We originally opened in 1986 as the Waitemata City Arts and Cultural Centre, later known as Lopdell House Gallery, sited in the historic Lopdell House building in the heart of scenic Titirangi, gateway to the Waitākere rain forest and en route to Auckland's famous west coast beaches. We reopened as Te Uru in November 2014 in new purpose-built facilities, offering extraordinary exhibitions, dramatic architecture and spectacular views of the surrounding area. Our name, Te Uru, makes reference to Te Hau a Uru, the wind that blows from the west, a powerful characteristic of the region and an important story for local iwi, Te Kawerau ā Maki, who have bestowed us with this new kaupapa. The west wind shares the messages and vision of the people that live in the west, brings change, sets direction and influences Auckland City from its mountainous perch atop Te Wao Nui o Tiriwa - the Waitākere Ranges. Te Uru will be a source of information and ideas that will project across the region - a fitting framework for a contemporary gallery. Join us for a free film programme expanding the group show 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘬𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘶𝘯:�𝘚𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘴 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘋𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘚𝘶𝘯𝘴 brings together two incredible films by STARS Collective and Mawena Yehouessi .wena both of which draw on Afrofuturist imaginaries to reframe Black identities, histories, and collective memories. Through experimental forms – weaving together myth, music, poetry, collage, and speculative storytelling – the films propose new cosmologies and modes of belonging beyond existing colonial narratives. Recalcitrant, sharp and challenging, these films are for a mature audience.

The exhibition 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘊𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘬𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘶𝘯 builds on mythic memories and speculative storytelling. It unfolds across the gallery space and extends to two film programmes all offering inquiries into non-linear timescapes and speculative myths, while exploring future worldbuilding as a speculative, collective and feminist practice. The second film programme, 𝘕𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘵 𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘍𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦, will be presented on MON 28 SEPT at 7pm.

This exhibition presents a dialogue between Aotearoa-based painters Jeena Shin (South Korea) and Jamie Te Heuheu (Ngāti Tūwharetoa). It forms part of a series of dialogue exhibitions at Te Uru, and brings together two distinct artistic practices through a mutual conceptual inquiry.

𝘔𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦 examines Shin and Te Heuheu’s shared exploration of paint as a temporal medium. Each artist follows a distinct process that they make tangible to the viewer. Shin’s works follow a system, one that she repeats, layers and transforms in her paintings and wall-based works. Her compositions emerge through endless configurations, resulting in works that capture the passage of time while resisting simple linearity. The end isn’t predetermined. Instead, Shin activates her system as a creative force operating between time and space. Te Heuheu’s undulating surfaces record the movement of his body across the canvas. He mobilises the possibilities of impasto in broad strokes that retain the texture of his laden brush. Through organic repetition and jazz-inspired titles, a musical type of rhythm emerges.

Join on Sunday 23 August at 11am for a kōrero on 𝘔𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦, an exhibition featuring Aotearoa-based painters Jeena Shin and Jamie Te Heuheu. The artists will be joined in conversation by the exhibition’s co-curators, Megan Bennett and Te Uru Assistant Curator Hōhua Thompson (Ngāti Awa, Ngāti Kahu, Ngāti Rangiwewehi, Te Aitanga-a-Hauiti).

Bringing the artists and curators together, this panel discussion will explore the shared interests that connect Shin and Te Heuheu’s practices, including process, repetition, movement and the temporal qualities of paint. The conversation will also consider the distinct approaches of each artist and the ideas that have shaped 𝘔𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘨𝘩 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦.

Bringing together works shaped by mythologies, Sci-Fi chronologies, proposed futures and various forms of worldmaking, the exhibition moves through constellations and imaginaries, where time fractures, loops and returns through resonances and interruptions. Assembling heterogeneous and fragmented imaginaries, the exhibition seeks not to restore coherence, but to reveal unexpected proximities and forms of relation that exceed dominant narratives.

Through richly layered paintings, Ige creates cumulative worlds where history, poetry, mythology, speculative fiction, ancestral practices, and future imaginings converge. Her practice unfolds at the threshold between lived experience and mythology, where everyday life and the otherworldly are not separate realities but overlapping ways of understanding existence. Ige weaves cultural references into a mythology of her own, allowing inherited knowledge and contemporary imagination to coexist without collapsing into one another.
