It is with immense sadness that I share news of Leon van den Eijkel’s passing. A truly remarkable artist and good friend, Leon left us peacefully Thursday evening. It was an honour, privilege and excellent fun to work with Leon, and to represent his work at the Black Asterisk.
Although the gallery has been closed for some time now, I have recently been working with Arjan van der Boon of the Dutch Oranjehof museum in Foxton. Their art gallery will host a major retrospective of Leon’s work, in conjunction with Te Papa. The ‘Colourful Nation’ exhibition will be opened on the Big Dutch Day Out in Foxton - in the presence of Minister Radhakrishnan, the ambassador and several MPs - on Saturday 24 April, after 11am. As part of the start of a national Dutch Week.
The timing of course is cruel, initially scheduled for Leon’s 80th birthday last year but delayed due to Covid. I know Leon was looking forward to this 3 month exhibition - as we all were - putting him in the limelight and honouring such a great artist. Thankfully the show will go on - an opportunity to remember Leon, experience just some of his incredible artistic legacy, and celebrate his life and work.
Goede vriend, we zullen je missen. We zijn allemaal bedroefd. Maar de herinneringen aan je humor en je grappige grijns zullen ons altijd bijblijven.
So long old friend, you will be dearly missed - Stuart Broughton, Director, Black Asterisk.
