🎶✨ NZ MUSIC MONTH | SATURDAYS IN MAY ✨🎶

Join us every Saturday this May at Te Wharekura & Te Wānanga for a vibrant, interactive celebration of Māori music, movement & storytelling.

Led by Te Whare Karioi, from the heart of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, this powerful performance series honours whakapapa, with each performer descending from the ancestor Tuperiri.

These dynamic, hour-long sessions bring together:
🌀 haka that you can feel in your chest
🎶 the call of taonga pūoro - pūkaea & pūtatara
⚔️ taiaha in motion
🌿 poi that carry rhythm, story & grace

This isn’t just something to watch, it’s something to experience. You’ll be invited to learn & connect more deeply to the cultural significance behind each element.

A free, whānau-friendly event where you can:
✨ feel the pulse of haka
✨ hear ancient instruments come to life
✨ move, learn & connect together

Celebrate NZ Music Month in a way that centres mātauranga Māori, performance & collective energy, right here in Tāmaki Makaurau.

📍 Te Wharekura & Te Wānanga
🗓 Every Saturday in May, 11am start.

A few weeks ago, our Te Wharekura team took to the moana for a special sail across the Waitematā Harbour 🌊

There’s something powerful about experiencing Tāmaki Makaurau from the water; feeling the wind, watching the city shift from a new perspective & reconnecting with the stories that shape this place. As one of Aotearoa’s most maritime cities, our connection to the moana runs deep, through migration, trade & everyday life.

A huge thank you to New Zealand Maritime Museum Hui Te Ananui a Tangaroafor hosting us & especially to Leichelle Tanoa for sharing the experience with us. Hui Te Ananui a Tangaroa - the dwelling place of Tangaroa, holds & shares these stories beautifully.

We were lucky enough to sail aboard the heritage scow Ted Ashby & the best part? You can too.

If you’re looking for a new way to experience the city, we highly recommend stepping aboard & seeing Tāmaki from the moana.

Ngā mihi nui for the reminder of how deeply we are shaped by the sea 💙
